The hybrid shoe, blending ballerina flats with trainers, is set to be the must-have footwear trend of 2025 and has already been spotted on style icons such as Iris Law and Emily Ratajkowski.
I’ve always been a ballet flats person. In fact, I’ve written about them so many times that I’ve lost count. They’re effortless, sweet and go with just about everything. But even I can admit that there are days when something with a little more cushioning wouldn’t go amiss. That’s where the ‘trainerina’ comes in – part flat, part trainer.
From jeggings to the scrumper, fashion loves a good mash-up, so it was only a matter of time before footwear trends followed suit. Trainerinas strike the ideal balance between the graceful style of ballet flats and the cushioned comfort of trainers. Think silky ribbon laces, pastel colourways and chunky, supportive soles. Some styles even add metallic mesh panels and elastic straps for a sportier edge.
The trend kicked off in spring/summer 2020 when Simone Rocha debuted her chunky ballet tracker on the catwalk. Miu Miu soon followed with a pretty pastel pair featuring luxe ribbon laces, while Kiko Kostadinov, Marc Jacobs and Cecilie Bahnsen have further pushed the mash-up idea, taking the flat into new and more colourful athletic territories.
Now, the high street has caught up with a variety of sporty balletcore styles. Choose from high-shine wine red pairs at Zara, strappy options at Vagabond and stylish sneakerina styles from Skechers. Whether you’re after an alternative to ballet flats or just something easy to slip on and go, the trainerina is the perfect middle ground.

The best hybrid ballet flats to shop now
Charles & Keith Casey mesh Mary Jane sneakers
With a sleek black mesh design, these Charles & Keith trainers just might be some of the coolest kicks around. The elastic straps are a game-changer, especially when you’re rushing to that 9am meeting.
Kiko Kostadinov Lella hybrid shoe
Kiko Kostadinov’s Lella style has become a favourite among London’s It girls for a reason. Crafted from 100% bovine leather, they have a soft faux teddy fur lining and look incredibly sweet when paired with colourful thick-ribbed socks.
Zara double-strap faux-patent ballet flats
This season, Zara offers a stunning collection of trainerinas, ranging from sporty styles to bold metallic options like these shiny red double-strap beauties.
Vagabond Hillary shoes
This chic take on the modern ballerina trainer is a great entry point into the trend. Featuring leather panels and adjustable hook-and-loop ankle straps, they’re incredibly easy to wear, especially in this light cream shade. Pair them with sleek black leggings and a ribbed white vest for a fresh spring look.
Bershka tied sporty ballet flats
With their delicate design, comfy elastic straps and dreamy pale pink hue, these Bershka beauties give off a real balletic vibe and are practically made for twirling.
Skechers Riboneer memory foam ladies shoes
Pair these Skechers with contrasting white tights to make them really pop. Go for a hi-low look and match them with a lace or tutu skirt and a distressed leather biker jacket. It’s the perfect balance of soft and tough.
