The anti-engagement ring trend that’s encouraging women to ‘self love’

When it comes to finger bling, there’s no point denying that the engagement ring is held up above all others as the most meaningful. The only problem is that all of an engagement ring’s significance is… well, it’s associated with somebody else.

So, in a bid to create a ring which not only celebrates a woman’s independence, but also encourages self-love, American creatives Samira Far and Melody Godfred started up a new jewellery company, Fred & Far.

Together, they create dazzlingly beautiful pinky rings, all of which are made from your choice of 14k yellow, white, or rose gold.

They also only use lab-created white sapphires, which ensures that the self-love rings remain conflict-free – and allow wearers to keep a clear conscience when committing to themselves.

However these rings aren’t just there to look good; they’re also there to make you feel good as well.

Speaking to Racked, Samira and Melody explained: “We were inspired by the engagement ring, which to date has been the only ring women wear to signify commitment.

“We decided to use the big bold design of an engagement ring and put it on the pinky, the most neglected finger on our hands, as a reminder to practice self love and care.”

They added that they have made sure to veer away from the old fashioned signet ring style, which is traditionally worn by men on their own pinkies.

Instead, they have taken their design inspiration from the “divine feminine” through the “symbol of the upside triangle” – and there’s no other style like it on the market.

Their website ensures that the important message behind each ring is felt whenever anyone lands on it, thanks to a beautifully penned letter to all of their potential buyers.

“Woman,” they say, addressing females everywhere. “Reclaim yourself. Wear a symbol of belonging… to yourself.”

They continue: “Engage yourself, in life, in love, in health…

“Shed the weight of uncertainty, of responsibility, or pain, of disappointment, of pressure.

“Commit to something better… choose happiness, choose love, choose power, choose fulfilment, choose choice.

“Choose yourself. You’re worthy.”

It’s unsurprising that the rings have become incredibly popular in a very short space of time, with celebrities such as Amber Rose and Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale getting 100% behind the new trend.

However, with prices starting at £113.69, some sceptics have suggested that the concept is just a little too expensive for them to get on board with.

After all, couldn’t any small trinket be an act of self-love and commitment, if bought with that intention?
