How AI is helping to change the way we shop – for the better

AI has already started to change the way we work, connect and take care of ourselves – but what about the way we shop?


From ChatGPT to virtual assistants, we’re increasingly aware that artificial intelligence is changing the world as we know it. In the workplace, it can assist you in doing your current job more quickly or help you to find a new one. But can it solve the eternal problem of what to wear?

With the current global fashion e-commerce market being worth over $820 billion (£667bn), there are more products than ever to pick from, which can be a double-edged sword. So much so that earlier this year, research by fintech company Klarna found that almost two-thirds of shoppers look forward to having an AI shopping assistant to help streamline the process – which is exactly what Klarna has created.

Shopping lens, the flagship new feature, allows shoppers to take a picture of things and styles in their surroundings, instantly find out where to buy them and get the best deal via the Klarna app. In order to do so, the app uses AI to translate the image into a search term so consumers can turn whatever catches their eye into a shoppable item.

Impressively, the shopping lens can also visually identify over 10 million items, from pieces of clothing to home decor and electronics. Through the app’s search and compare tool, shoppers are able to compare prices, retailers and reviews as well as being shown similar items, sparking even more inspiration for products they may have never known existed. 

All consumers have to do is snap the item they desire as the shopping lens can identify over 10 million products be it a piece of clothing, home decor or electronics- and match these with over 50 million store offers in Klarna’s search and compare tool, enabling curious shoppers to learn more, and compare prices, retailers and reviews.

Clever technology that helps reduce decision fatigue and you get the best deal? Sounds good to us.
