Every year, Vanity Fair present a collector’s edition Hollywood cover, featuring a selection of the most talented actresses of the year in red carpet ball gowns.

This year, the fold-out cover spread, shot by Annie Leibovitz, includes Cate Blanchett, Charlotte Rampling, Brie Larson and Lupita Nyong’o – among others.

But there’s one star who completely steals the show: Diane Keaton.

Instead of opting for a show-stopping gown like the others, Keaton wore…her own clothes.

Standing in the far right corner, set back from the others, Keaton, 70, once again reveals her sartorial prowess (which we all fell in love with in Woody Allen’s Annie Hall).

Standing tall with her arms crossed, smiling, wearing a black buttoned-up morning coat, polka dot scarf and bowler hat, Keaton is quite a stark comparison to the other women’s glamorous clothes.

According to Vanity Fair’s style director, Jessica Diehl, Keaton and her discussed the outfit choice for some time – and came to the idea of a tuxedo. But Keaton then suggested:

“Or I could wear something like my favourite person, Paul Harnden, but that’s probably not dressed up enough.”

Diehl suggested Keaton arrive in the outfit anyway, and they would decide on the day.

When the day came, Keaton went through the androgynous collection the fashion team had selected, and loved it all – but Leibowitz said:

“Yeah, I love that too, but you kind of already look great!”

Keaton then confirmed the story with Stylist.co.uk in a tweet saying:

“Sometimes, when you get somebody like that, who has taken so much time to hone her personal style, you’re almost an idiot to try and improve upon that in five and a half minutes,” says Diehl.

So the cover was shot with Keaton in the clothes she arrived in – a Harden coat, Ralph Lauren scarf and Baron Hats bowler.

Social media reacted to the cover shoot positively, loving Keaton’s style and how she looks so apart from the rest of the women, with some comparing her to a Tarantino character, and others to a sleuth. 

Her image has even been super-imposed over other scenarios, showing how 'Diane Keaton makes everything better.'

We just can't get enough of her: a true fashion icon.
