Academy Awards 2019: the must-see red carpet fashion and Oscars arrivals

From Glenn Close to Brie Larson, here’s every incredible moment from the 2019 Academy Awards red carpet.

It’s official: the biggest event of the awards season is finally upon us.

On 24 February 2019, the prestigious 91st Academy Awards (that’s the Oscars, to you and me) took place at the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles. As film buffs will no doubt be aware, the live-performance auditorium, formerly known as the Kodak Theatre, has hosted every single Academy Awards since 2002. And, juse as we have seen for the past 17 years, stars flooded the red carpet dressed in their best for the movie awards show.

The Wife’s Glenn Close, who is a top contender for this year’s Best Actress (which would, incidentally, be her first ever Academy Award), took inspiration from the Oscar statuette and dressed in a golden gown. Lady Gaga donned black, and Olivia Colman a royal green (fitting, considering she’s nominated for her role as Queen Anne in The Favourite!). Jennifer Lopez and Brie Larson - perhaps better known nowadays as Captain Marvel herself - channeled a similar theme in silver gowns. Ocean’s 8 star Awkwafina, meanwhile, donned a chic metallic pantsuit, Michelle Yeoh an embellished ballgown, Emma Stone a bronze column dress, and Chadwick Boseman an incredibly glitzy tuxedo jacket, too.

Elsewhere on the red carpet, Gemma Chan, Sarah Paulson and Helen Mirren donned vivid pink gowns, while Jason Momoa showcased a millennial pink tuxedo. Yalitza Aparicio and Charlize Theron opted for sky-blue dresses, Laura Dern and Richard E Grant for mulberry, Rachel Weisz for bright red, and Tessa Thompson for a black ruffled number.

Here are some of our favourite looks from the night so far (we will work to update this gallery throughout the night):
