Why a prairie dress is your smartest autumnal buy, according to a fashion director

You may not think that buying a flowing cotton dress in autumn is the best move, but Stylist’s fashion director, Lucy Reber, will tell you why it absolutely is.
We talk a lot in the office about trans-seasonal dressing. For so many months of the year, we seem stuck in that ‘in between’ sort of weather that requires layers and careful handling. I’m talking about those magical items that will be just as useful when getting dressed in July as in October, and the prairie dress is one of them.
There are a few things that define a dress as ‘prairie’. Light cotton fabric, a flowy silhouette and some floral print or feminine ruffle detailing that set it apart as something special. These dresses have character and charm that transcend trends and seasons. The prairie dress I bought five years ago is still relevant and looks as fabulous now as always.
Obviously, a light cotton, flowing dress is the perfect thing to wear at the height of summer or in a September heatwave. Cool and breezy, and looks great styled with a gold hoop, flat leather sandal and woven tote bag. But the beauty of the boho-leaning prairie dress is its ability to be styled with eclectic charm. There are just so many ways to wear it as the weather turns colder.
Layer up with a cosy knitted cardigan – a key piece for the season, as seen at Miu Miu, Gucci and Chanel. Turn it into a skirt by wearing under a crew-neck cashmere knit with long leather boots for the office. Or for a crisp winter walk throw on an outsized woollen overcoat and add wellingtons to tie into this season’s fascination with everything heritage style.
There are so many brands that do this type of dress well, both high end and on the street. Read on for my edit of the best for now.
Ghost Ramona cotton embroidered border midi dress
I love the smock-like nature of this simple embroidered dress.
While it is the ideal easy summer dress, it’s also going to look slick layered over a slim merino roll neck, with long leather boots come autumn.
It comes in two colour ways – this stone hue and also black with white embroidery.
