From cosy-core to elevated autumnal ensembles, Stylist’s fashion director tells us why Uniqlo’s range of merino knitwear is her new season MVP…

Ditsy summer florals, begone. It’s officially autumn and the season for being cosy and comfortable in layered ensembles and extra-fine textures.

And this month also sees the return of knitwear – the soft and warm wardrobe must-have that can elevate anything, from a humble pair of jeans to a satin babydoll dress. And don’t just take it from us. When it comes to cardigans and crew neck sweaters, Stylist’s own fashion director Lucy Reber is a self-confessed wool worshipper.

“It’s the perfect piece to add texture and an extra layer to our look, as well as warmth,” says Reber. “Knitwear has such an enduring charm, it’s always in style.”

“Two things immediately spring to mind when unpacking some of the knitwear trends seen on the a/w runways,” says Reber. “Firstly, the cardigan as seen at Gucci, Ferragamo and Chanel. And, secondly, styling your knit over your shoulders, it acts as a scarf to keep you warm, while adding depth and interest to your look.”

In terms of shopping for knitwear, for Reber there’s one brand that nails classic knitwear season after season.

“I always look to Uniqlo for advanced technical fabrics. I know they’re ahead of the curve with fabrics that are breathable yet warm and that are going to wear well. The Extra Fine Merino collection is a perfect example of this. Being able to pop your knit in the washing machine is a serious bonus, while the styling options across the range are absolutely endless.”

So, to get you set for snuggle season (without compromising on style), here are Reber’s top picks from the Uniqlo merino range. She is a fashion director, so yes, she knows best…

1. The pleated knit skirt

This pleated skirt is the perfect a/w investment as it taps into two trends: elevated knitwear, and the maxi skirt. Team with lace-up boots and an oversized cardigan for a cosy grunge look.

Green is having an absolute moment and this deep shade of emerald is ideal for transitioning from autumn through to winter. Wear over a voluminous poplin dress for a nod to prairie chic or with black cropped trousers for an Audrey Hepburn-style look.

4. The striped turtleneck

Autumn calls for strong pops of colour or pattern to lift heavier fabrics such as tweed and wool tailoring. Team this classic striped ribbed turtleneck with a mid-length pleated skirt in either black or tartan for a trend-led preppy look.
