4 autumn coats for any occasion and how to style them

Whether it’s a statement coat or one that takes any outfit to the next level, Stylist fashion editor Polly Knight has got you covered when it comes to this season’s essential coats…

Coats are arguably the most important part of any seasonal wardrobe.

Sure, they serve a functional purpose (like keeping our very souls warm in temperatures that insist on dropping), but crucially, an on-trend coat can elevate your entire wardrobe in a single purchase. No pressure, then.

With that in mind, here are four coats that will cover you all autumn, plus what you can wear them with.

1. The leopard print one

We challenge you to go a day this season without spotting leopard print somewhere.

While it’s currently present in all its guises (hello midi skirts, tees, boots, you name it), the leopard print coat is this season’s must-buy style.

“Team it with elements of this season’s Western trend, like leather trousers in chocolate and cowboy boots,” says Knight.

2. The structured one

“A structured double-breasted coat is bang on trend to help add a strong silhouette to feminine, floaty dresses,” says Knight.

“It’s also just as at home with ankle boots as it is booties, which means you can go from office to event with a simple shoe switch.”

Opt for a snake print dress (you’ll find it right next to the leopard print in the ‘popular pattern’ section) to double up on a/w trends.

3. The work one

When it comes to workwear, you’re bound to have your staples – and chances are your colour palette ranges from black to grey.

“Try a waterfall-style coat in a light cream and hit refresh on your workwear wardrobe,” recommends Knight.

“Adding light colours to your otherwise muted staples will elevate your whole look.”

4. The luxe one

Incorporating on-trend sporty touches to your outfits doesn’t mean you have to dive straight into snap button joggers and ugly-chic trainers.

You can go more courtside than centre court with touches such as a striped canvas belt and block colour roll neck.

“This black coat plays well in both worlds with a slick silhouette, but with zip pockets and subtle details like ribbed shoulders,” adds Knight.
