Missing the Women’s World Cup? Keep your head in the game with these brilliant explorations of women’s sport and everything it has to offer.
It may have only been three weeks since the Women’s World Cup came to an end in Australia, but if you’re anything like us, you’re already on the hunt for more women’s sport to enjoy.
Right now, we’ve got Coco Gauff’s success at the US Open and the upcoming start of the Women’s Super League on our radar – and we’re keeping an eye on Emily Campbell’s performance at the weightlifting world championships later this month, too.
But if the sport itself isn’t enough to keep you occupied, there is plenty of brilliant women’s sports content out there to enjoy. With options ranging from documentaries and video series to podcasts and books, there’s lots to explore. Below, we’ve rounded up just a handful of our favourites both old and new.
The best podcasts about women’s sport
The Game Changers
If you want to learn more about the trailblazing women leading the way across the world of sport, look no further than this podcast hosted by Sue Anstiss, a women’s sport equality activist and author of the book Game On: The Unstoppable Rise Of Women’s Sport.
The podcast, which has been going since 2019, sees Anstiss chat with guests from across the sporting industry, from iconic TV pundits to world-leading para-athletes. Alongside finding out more about their careers and what drives them, each episode contains discussion of the fight for equality in women’s sport, and what more needs to be done.
Off The Bench: The Women’s Sport Podcast
This new podcast may only have a couple of episodes under its belt so far, but we’re confident that it’s going to turn into a new favourite. Led by journalist Molly McElwee and Paralympic champion Lauren Rowles MBE, the show explores how the world’s leading sportswomen smashed through barriers to achieve success.
Each episode features an interview with a different athlete, coach or expert – just two of the guests the duo has chatted to so far include former cricketer Katherine Sciver-Brunt and athlete-turned-rugby player Shaunagh Brown.
Attacking Third
If the fast-approaching start of the Women’s Super League (WSL) season isn’t enough to keep you busy, this podcast from CBS covers all things football in the UK and across the pond, so you don’t have to miss a single update.
Over the summer, the podcast has turned its attention to the World Cup, but with the US National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) set to come to an end on 15 October and the WSL transfer window just a few days from closing, there’s plenty to keep up with.
The best video series about women’s sport
Sporty AF
This new digital series from Team GB features TV presenter AJ Odudo in conversation with female Olympians to discuss topics including body image, menstruation and gender equality. Each episode – of which there are six – will feature a different group of Olympians, with confirmed guests including the shooter Amber Hill, sprinter Imani-Lara Lansiquot and rugby sevens player Abi Burton.
The first episode will be released on Wednesday (13 September) on Team GB’s YouTube channel, with subsequent episodes released monthly.
Inside The Pride: The Untold Story Of England’s Euros Victory
Missing the Lionesses? Why not revisit last summer’s incredible Euros win with this emotional and uplifting documentary from England’s YouTube channel.
At over 30 minutes in length, the one-off film documents the team’s preparations for each match throughout the tournament and provides a behind-the-scenes look at what the victory meant for each member of the team.
Game On: The Unstoppable Rise Of Women's Sport
There’s nothing quite like a good sports documentary to leave you feeling inspired, and this adaptation of Sue Anstiss’s incredible book does just that.
As well as painting a hopeful picture of what women’s sport might look like in the future, the documentary looks back at the battles women have fought throughout history to make space for the younger generations to succeed. Featuring interviews with pioneering women from across the industry, including TV presenter Clare Balding and Paralympian Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson DBE, it’s a truly rousing watch.
The best books about women’s sport
Eat Sweat Play
Described as “part manifesto, part how-to”, Anna Kessel’s 2016 book may have been a predecessor to the current success we’re seeing across women’s sport, but its argument is a timely reminder of why the fight to make sport available to everyone is so important.
Exploring the myriad of reasons why women struggle to get involved in sport in the first place – from menstruation to the gender pay gap – the book is a must-read for anyone who wants to join the fight for gender equality in sport.
A Woman’s Game
To gain a full understanding of just how remarkable the Lionesses’ recent success has been, pick up a copy of A Woman’s Game by Suzanne Wrack. While the cover may picture Chloe Kelly during her iconic Euros goal celebration, the book takes us all the way back to the 19th century, before women were banned from playing for 50 years.
Published in June this year, the book is an up-to-date reminder of everything that’s happened in women’s football so far and the exciting future that’s waiting just around the corner.
How She Did It
Fans of running will love this incredible look at the work that goes into being a successful long-distance runner – with plenty of open and honest interviews to explore.
As well as asking a range of runners for their honest experiences of success, failure and the work that goes in between, the book provides an in-depth look at what it takes to be a successful competitive runner, providing a roadmap for women who want to improve their performance but don’t know where to start.
