Vigil: Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie make a dramatic return in the trailer for season 2

2 min read

Vigil season two officially has a trailer and a release date, but how will it compare to the explosive last series?

Vigil season one certainly made quite a… splash, didn’t it? The gripping drama quickly became the BBC’s most-watched new drama launch since 2018’s Bodyguard, attracting an audience of over 13 million viewers across 30 days for episode one alone. The debut run also won an international Emmy and gained a Bafta nomination for best drama series, so it should be no surprise that an exciting second season was confirmed in March.

But following the nail-biting finale, what exactly could happen in the long-awaited follow-up? And when can we expect season two to land on our screens? Here’s everything to know so far.

What is the plot of Vigil season two?

Throughout the first gripping season, viewers saw DCI Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) and her colleagues on land spending weeks tracking down those responsible for the death onboard the nuclear submarine, looking into everything from Russian spies and drug-fuelled accidents to secret transfers. With shocking deaths and unexpected twists, Vigil certainly knew how to keep us glued to our sofas.

As for the second season, according to Deadline, Jones will be back as Silva, with Rose Leslie returning as her lover, DS Kirsten Longacre.

We also know that the story will take us from sea to the skies, with the leads entering the closed and hostile environment of the Royal Air Force as they’re tasked with uncovering the cause of multiple unexplained fatalities at a Scottish military base.

Is there a trailer for season two of Vigil?

Yes! Released today, the one-minute clip teases military investigator DCI Silva’s return as she enters the secret world of drone warfare to catch a killer. The deeper you go, the darker it gets, but who can she trust?

Watch it for yourself below:

Who will star in Vigil season two?

As well as returning characters, there’s a host of new cast members, with Romola Garai (Becoming Elizabeth, The Hour) and Dougray Scott (Crime, Enigma) taking major roles, as well as Amir El-Masry (SAS Rogue Heroes, Limbo), David Elliot (The Liberator, Bulletproof), Chris Jenks (Sex Education, Karen Pirie), Tommy Sim’aan (The Midwich Cuckoos), Oscar Salem (House of the Dragon), Jonathan Ajayi (Noughts + Crosses) and newcomer Hiba Medina.

When will Vigil season two be released?

The six-episode season will premiere on Sunday 10 December at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
