Every question the finale of The White Lotus needs to answer

6 min read

With one episode to go, there’s a lot that still needs to be tied up before everyone packs their cases and leaves the Thai outpost of The White Lotus. Here are the biggest questions we have. And if you haven’t watched all episodes of series three yet, there will be spoilers…

After the dramatics of episode six of The White Lotus (and that scene with Saxon and brother Lochlan), this week’s penultimate episode was never going to quite match the intensity. It felt like an episode where the show’s creator Mike White was putting all the chess pieces into place, before (hopefully) unleashing pure TV drama in the finale.

Ultimately, it was an episode that led to us having a lot more questions than taking us closer to a resolution, so my colleague Steven and I have come up with everything we want and need to be resolved in the final episode of Rich People on their Bloody Holidays when it comes out next week.

And be warned, there will be spoilers for anyone who’s not up to date.

The White Lotus

Which gun do we hear firing in episode one?

So far we know about the existence of three guns: Gaitok’s (Tayme Thapthimthong) gun, which was stolen by Tim (Jason Issacs); the one used by the the robbers (who we now know were Valentin’s mates) to hold up the hotel boutique; and the gun that Rick (Walter Goggins) took to see Jim, the man who killed his father.

Rick got rid of his, but which of the remaining guns can we hear firing in the first episode, and was one of them responsible for the corpse that Zion sees floating in the water? Or maybe more than one gun will be used and there will be more than one death.

The White Lotus

Is Lochlan the body floating in the water in episode one?

This is the big one! As is now tradition in the drama, we know there’s a dead body in the resort, but we have to scroll back to find out whose it is.

In my colleague Shahed’s examination of the Easter eggs in the opening credits, she notes that the artwork that’s attached to Lochlan’s (Sam Nivola) name features a body floating in the water. Interesting….

“I don’t want to give in to my dark shit,” Lochlan ominously says to sister Piper (Sarah Catherine Hook) while also telling her he wants to crash her monastic retreat, which she’s clearly not thrilled about.

What could possibly be more ‘dark shit’ than masturbating your brother while having sex with someone else? Actually, I don’t want to know…

And let’s not forget at the full moon party, Lochlan warned brother Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger) that “one day I’ll take you down”. There’s clearly a darkness that no one expected in the little magician. I suspect he’s the most messed up of all the Ratliff siblings, which is saying something. Could it lead to his demise?

And if not Lochlan, then who?

The White Lotus

Is Tim going to lose it?

The Ratfliff patriarch isn’t in a good place, to put it mildly. He’s been tranquillising himself to deal with his business imploding and potential imprisonment, having terrifying dreams and hallucinations, and his wife, Victoria (Parker Posey), has warned him that life wouldn’t be worth living if they were poor.

Tim’s in a hell of his own making, and I’m wondering how he’ll get out of it. Particularly as the gun he’d hidden has since been reclaimed.

Perhaps he’ll also embrace Buddhism and join the rest of the family at the monastery. Pity the monks…

Episode 07 The White Lotus- Killer Instincts

What’s going on with Mook?

“It’s human to fight,” Mook  (Lalisa Manobal) tells Gaitok when he admits to her that he doesn’t want to cause people violence. Which sounds like foreshadowing to me.

Lalisa’s character hasn’t had much drama, other than flirting with Gaitok, so can we finally expect some proper action from her? And might she be in cahoots with Valentin’s (Arnas Fedaravičius) mates, who Gaitok has just realised were behind the robbery at the resort?

The White Lotus

Is a deadly smoothie in the offing?

In episode one, when the new residents are shown to the accommodation, Saxon asks, “What am I supposed to do here all week without my phone? Eat a bunch of fruit?”

Pam (Morgana O’Reilly) replies, “I wouldn’t eat that. That’s the fruit of the mighty pong pong tree and the seeds of the fruit are toxic”.

Saxon: “Kill you toxic?”

Pam: “Yeah, it could actually.”

We know that no lines in the Mike White universe are throwaway, so why would a toxic fruit be referenced if it wasn’t going to appear again? Plus, Saxon has that blender for those protein shakes he’s obsessed with, so perhaps it could become an accomplice to a murder.

The White Lotus

Why did Victoria pretend not to recognise Kate?

“It might be something, it might be nothing,” Steven suggests, “but I’m still wondering why Victoria blanked Kate (Lesley Bibb) at the breakfast table.”

And I agree, is there a mystery to emerge about why Victoria abandoned her Southern manners? Or has all that Lorazepam addled her memory?

White Lotus Episode 07 - Killer Instincts

Where did Chelsea get her outfit from?

OK, this one is strictly just an answer that I need!

But the black dress, the kitten heels and the perfectly tousled hair  that Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood) wore to the dinner party is how I want to look on all holidays going forward.

Although I am very curious to know how Chelsea and Chloe got so close so quickly – within a day they were telling each other they loved each other. Or perhaps that’s just a wry look at the superficial friendships we create on holiday that are never to be seen again.

The White Lotus

Is Rick in trouble?

The main thing that consumed me watching the penultimate episode was: has Rick lost his mind?

Why didn’t he prep Frank (Sam Rockwell) for his meeting with Sritala (Lek Patravadi) and why didn’t he stop him pounding the whisky, thus ruining his sobriety? That’s not being a good friend!

Rick’s also staying in the hotel of the man he just threatened with a gun and attacked. So why did he run away from their house? Jim and his wife, Sritala, can simply send their bodyguards to his room to take revenge. And they’ll have all Rick’s details on record so can chase him down if he does a runner. I feel like he hasn’t thought this through at all!

Or perhaps there will be another attempt from Rick to avenge his father’s death, meaning his poor planning doesn’t matter.

The White Lotus

Will Kate, Jaclyn and Laurie get separate flights home?

It’s not been the girls’ trip of dreams! The three school friends have bickered, competed, bitched had affairs and finally told each other (sort of) what they really think of each other.

Will Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan) charter her own flight to escape and leave Kate and Laurie (Carrie Coon) in the departure lounge? The post-coital words no one wants to hear “you have PayPal? Or Zelle?” forever ringing in Laurie’s ears.

Although I suspect this dynamic might be part for the course for the threesome.  They’ll each post a glossy highlights reel #FriendshipGoals on Instagram, ignore each other for a couple of years and repeat it all again in 2028.

The White Lotus Episode 07 - Killer Instincts

Will Belinda take the money?

Gary/Greg has offered Belinda (Natasha Rothwell) $100,000 in hush money. She’s unsure whether to take it, which sounds like madness to me. Her (very handsome) son Zion is wise to encourage her to take it, as he’ll only come after Belinda or Zion.

My suggestion: ask him for $1,000,000 to let him “live his life in peace” (especially as his version of peace seems to involve dark sexual fantasies involving his parents) and book the next first-class flight out of there. But will that give us the dramatic finale we’re all craving?

To be honest, who needs drama? I just want Belinda to be OK. The rest are all fair game…
