From submarines to the skies and now to the Arctic Circle: season three of BBC’s Vigil has been confirmed, with Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie returning to solve yet another grisly murder.
“Tense.” “Incredible.” “One of the greatest BBC dramas of all time.” These are all phrases that have been used to describe Vigil, the thrilling detective drama that has been on our screens since 2021 and given us some of the most edge-of-your-seat cliffhangers in TV history.
If you’re in need of a recap, season one introduced us to Suranne Jones as DCI Amy Silva, a detective investigating the mysterious disappearance of a Scottish fishing trawler and a death onboard a Trident nuclear submarine. Season two, which also starred Rose Leslie as her partner DI Kirsten Longacre, took to the skies after they were tasked with uncovering the cause of multiple unexplained fatalities at a Royal Air Force base. With shocking deaths and unexpected twists throughout both series, Vigil certainly knew how to keep us glued to our sofas.
And now we know that the show will be returning for a much-anticipated third season, which will see Silva and Longacre travel further afield to the Arctic Circle, where a member of a covert British special forces mission has been shot dead.
According to the official plot synopsis, Silva and Longacre will need to work together to catch the killer and diffuse a potential international confrontation driven by a land grab for energy and resources in the changing polar climate, with both their careers and relationship on the line. So yes, it sounds like exactly the kind of high-stakes action we’ve come to expect.
And after that explosive season two finale, we can’t wait to see how the new series unfolds and explores more of the tense relationship between the two detectives.

So far, we know that we can expect six standalone episodes from season three, though further plot details, a full cast and a release date are yet to be shared.
However, in a statement on the show’s return, Jones said: “I can’t wait to return to Vigil series three, see our brilliant team in Scotland and work with Rose again. I’m sure it will be a thrill of a ride.” Hopefully, it won’t be long until we’re glued to our screens on a Sunday night once more.
