Gemma Whelan’s hit ITV series returns to our screens this September, and we honestly cannot wait for The Tower season three.

The Tower fans, rejoice: the third season of the popular ITV crime drama – subtitled Gallowstree Lane – is shaping up to be even better than the first two chapters in the series.

Based on Kate London’s third novel, and adapted by screenwriter Patrick Harbinson, Gallowstree Lane will once again delve into the details of a grisly and unsettling case, as DI Sarah Collins (Gemma Whelan) is called to the brutal stabbing of a teenager.

Watch the trailer for The Tower season 3 below:

Here’s everything you need to know, then, about the next chapter in The Tower series.

What’s The Tower season 3 about?

Picking up some two years after the events of season two, a young teenager has been the victim of a brutal stabbing. During her investigations, Sarah once again crosses paths with Lizzie Adama, who is trying to balance her role as a detective with her family life.

It isn’t long before Sarah encounters further conflict in the form of DI Kieran Shaw, who is running Operation Perseus, “an undercover police task force set up to bring down south London drug kingpin Shakiel Oliver”.

The synopsis continues: “Kieran is working with DC Steve Bradshaw who has gone undercover to infiltrate Shakiel’s empire. The focus of Sarah and Kieran’s conflict is 15-year-old Ryan Kennedy, who witnessed the fatal stabbing but is also a key part of Shakiel’s inner circle.

“As Perseus heads to its shocking climax, Ryan will have a surprising role to play.”

Colour us intrigued…

Who stars in The Tower season 3?

As mentioned already, the obscenely talented Gemma Whelan will once again lead the series as Sarah Collins.

She is joined by:

  • Tahirah Sharif as Lizzie Adama
  • Jimmy Akingbola as Steve Bradshaw
  • Emmett J Scanlan as Kieran Shaw
  • Lamar Waves as Ryan Kennedy

What are people saying about The Tower season 3?

Teasing what’s to come in this new third season, Harbinson tells Radio Times: “I remember reading all three books together and Gallowstree Lane, I thought: ‘If we ever get to this point with The Tower, this one will be a delight to adapt’ because the movement of it is just so intensely dramatic and the way it brings personal stories together along with the crime, the big world of crime which is knife crime.”

Meanwhile, at the launch Q&A, Whelan has promised fans that the series is better than ever. “I think from the days of watching Columbo and Murder She Wrote, I always thought that would be a really fantastic thing to be a part of, to be a recurring role in a cast that becomes family. You know the role more, the writer knows the role more, and they write for you more,” she explained.

“It’s a continuing pleasure, and I think it gets better and better as we all get to know each other better.”

When and where can we watch The Tower season 3?

The third season of The Tower will premiere via ITV1 on 2 September at 9pm.
