Time jumping in romcoms can be hit or miss, but for The Road Trip, it really works. The scenes from the past are needed to understand present events and help to explain why things between Addie and Dylan are so frosty and strange. And that the time jumps occur in the same place that Addie and the gang are travelling to is a sweet full-circle moment for the story.

But it’s the chemistry between Appleton’s Addie and Davidson’s Dylan that is the star of the show. From the moment the pair bump into each other again, you can feel the complicated ghosts of their previous relationship in the room. The facial expressions, cutting one-liners and sneaky glances all work together to build a picture of Addie and Dylan and what may have happened between them. And their on-screen chemistry is even more palpable in the scenes from the past when they’re both figuring each other out and the romance is in its early days.

“There’s a magnetism between them. Sometimes, you can’t explain an attraction or an intrigue, there’s just a string that pulls you together,” Appleton shared during a Q&A screening session.

“With Addie, Dylan gets the chance to be the person he wants to be, but it isn’t what he originally set out to do,” added Davidson. “They’re intrigued by each other’s differences.”

The Road Trip doesn’t just explore romantic love either but other forms of love and connection too. The sisterly bond between Addie and Deb is beautiful to watch, as is the complex but deep friendship between Dylan and Marcus. And all these relationships are explored in the confines of a campervan, so the stories are amplified as they’re all forced to think and reflect on each other.

This romcom series is a multi-layered romance that ultimately asks: can you meet the right person at the wrong time? It’s a question that is one of my all-time favourite romcom tropes, and The Road Trip delivers on that in abundance – all while they’re stuck together in a campervan.
