Get ready to hear the Lionesses roar in a very special episode of A League Of Their Own

The multi-award winning sports quiz, A League Of Their Own, is back for its 18th series – but this time, it has former England footballer Jill Scott on its side.

With over 160 England caps and 27 goals to her name, it’s little wonder that the Tyneside legend has been confirmed as the new captain of the blue team. The only question we have about Scott’s appointment is this: why on earth did it take so long?

“It’s brilliant to be able to welcome Jill Scott, a legend of the game and national treasure, to the A League Of Their Own family as a new team captain,” says Romesh Ranganathan, who hosts the hit series.

Meanwhile, Jamie Redknapp, who captains the opposing team captain, says: “What can I say? Jill Scott, a proper champion and England hero. I can’t wait to go head to head with her each week on A League Of Their Own.

“She might have won a European Cup with the Lionesses, but does she have what it takes to win against the Red team?!”

Kicking off her role as captain in style, Scott is set to guide comedians Maisie Adam and Katherine Ryan through what it takes to be a world-beating Lioness.

And, with the Women’s World Cup just around the corner, the episode is the perfect way to psych yourself up for four weeks of hollering for the England women’s team.

Scott was announced as the new face of the Sky show in a big reveal at the Angel of the North as a 4.5 metre statue was unveiled in her honour.

Speaking to ITV at the event, she said: “Young girls are wanting to play football and now feeling like they can play football. People recognise now that football is for everyone.

“It has also changed lives on the other side of the pyramid. You have a lot of women whose opportunities were cut away from them because football wasn’t where it was supposed to be for them. Now they have gone back and joined local teams.”

Fingers crossed that Scott’s presence on A League Of Their Own will similarly inspire viewers, eh?

The Lionesses: A League Of Their Own Special will be available from 12 July on Sky Max and NOW

The new season of A League Of Their Own will launch exclusively on Sky Max and NOW later this year
