The Choice: we couldn’t be more ready for Netflix’s new political thriller starring Suranne Jones

It’s got high-stakes drama, it’s got political intrigue, it’s got Suranne Jones… we’re already deeply invested in The Choice, coming to Netflix.

She’s been stuck in a submarine investigating a murder, stepped into the shoes of a GP whose marriage is spiralling out of control and battled drones in warzones. Now Suranne Jones is set to spike our blood pressure once more in a high-stakes political thriller where she plays one of the two most powerful women in the world.

The Choice, created by Bridge Of Spies writer Matt Charman, sounds so up our street that we might just take up residence in the weird bungalow at the end of the road while we wait for its release. So, let’s investigate what we know about it so far…

What is the plot of The Choice?

Suranne Jones, also an executive producer on the series, plays Abigail Dalton, a newly elected British prime minister whose popularity is waning due to an ongoing healthcare crisis. (How pertinent.) Across the Channel, Vivienne Toussaint (Julie Delpy of Before Sunset and Before Sunrise fame), who made history as the country’s first female French president, is campaigning for re-election no matter what it takes. So, a summit between the two could help them both.

However, things take a turn for the tense when Dalton’s husband is kidnapped and Toussaint is blackmailed, leaving them in a fierce rivalry and both fighting for political – and physical – survival. We feel stressed just thinking about it.

Who is in The Choice

Starring alongside Jones and Delpy are Corey Mylchreest (Queen Charlotte) who plays Matheo Lewis, Toussaint’s stepson; Lucian Msamati (Gangs Of London) as Kofi Adomako, Dalton’s chief of staff and Ashley Thomas (Them, Great Expectations) as Alex Anderson, Dalton’s doctor husband. James Cosmo (Jack Ryan, Game Of Thrones) plays Max Dalton, her ailing father; and Jehnny Beth (Anatomy Of A Fall) is Adrienne Pelletier, Toussaint’s chief of staff. The five-part series is written by Matt Charman (Bridge Of Spies).

When can I watch The Choice?

The series will start filming in spring 2024 and will be released in 2025.

In the meantime, if you want more Suranne Jones in your life, tune into BBC One’s Comic Relief: Funny For Money on 17 March, to see her take on an icon of our times: Claudia Winkleman in The Traitors.

The spoof of the beloved game show will also star Jonathan Bailey as Harry; Kiell Smith-Bynoe as Miles; Sally Phillips as Diane; Asim Chaudhry as Jaz (we’re also praying for a Jazatha Christie series); David Walliams as Paul; Iain Stirling as Ross; and Catherine Tate as Evie and Charlie.
