Looking for another Regency romance to fill the Bridgerton-shaped hole in your life? Look no further than Apple TV+’s The Buccaneers.

A period drama about girls with money, men with power, new money and old secrets. That’s how Apple TV+’s upcoming release The Buccaneers is being billed.

The eight-episode series, from creator Katherine Jakeways, is inspired by Edith Wharton’s unfinished final novel of the same name and follows the daughters of America’s new wealth as they try to bag themselves an aristocrat in 1870s London.

As we eagerly await the third season of Netflix’s Bridgerton (expected in late 2023), The Buccaneers sounds like exactly what we need to fill the Regency romance slot on our watchlist. Here’s everything we know about the show so far.

Watch the trailer for The Buccaneers:

What is the plot of The Buccaneers?

The drama centers around a group of young American girls who “explode into the tightly corseted London season of the 1870s, kicking off an Anglo-American culture clash as the land of the stiff upper lip is infiltrated by a refreshing disregard for centuries of tradition”, according to the official synopsis shared by Apple TV+.

“The daughters of America’s new rich (aka the buccaneers) were sent to England to secure husbands and titles, but their hearts are set on much more than that, and saying ‘I do’ is just the beginning…”

The ensemble cast also includes Josh Dylan as Lord Richard Marable, Guy Remmers as Theo, Duke of Tintagel, Matthew Broome as Guy Thwarte and Barney Fishwick as Lord James Seadown.

Led by an all-female creative team, The Buccaneers is written by series creator Jakeways and directed by Bafta winner Susanna White.
