The Big Door Prize season 2: one of the best shows of 2023 is back with a bang

With a cool 92% ‘fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, we can’t wait to fall in love with The Big Door Prize all over again.
Certain shows stick with you long after the credits roll on the final episode, and The Big Door Prize is absolutely one such show.
With a talented ensemble cast, a seriously quirky premise, and an incredibly compelling blend of drama, mystery and comedy, the Apple TV+ series was hailed by critics and viewers alike when it dropped on the streaming platform last spring.
Thankfully, it seems the story is far from over. In fact, viewers are set to dive back into the small town of Deerfield, Louisiana, for a second round of deft storytelling (well-seasoned with a smattering of profound life questions, of course).
Watch the trailer for The Big Door Prize season 2 below:
Naturally, expectations are sky-high for the second season of The Big Door Prize.
With that in mind, then, here’s what to expect from the next chapter in the tale…
What happens in The Big Door Prize season 2?
Everyone remembers what happened in the first season of The Big Door Prize, right? Based on MO Walsh’s novel, it saw a mysterious machine appear in a small town, promising to reveal each resident’s true life potential… and upending their worlds forever.
The second season, as you’ve likely guessed, picks up pretty much where we left off, as the residents of Deerfield are warned to prepare themselves for the mysterious ‘next stage’ of the machine’s mission.
“As everyone’s potentials are exchanged for visions, new relationships form and new questions are asked,” explains the official synopsis.
“Dusty and Cass decide to take time apart, while Trina and Jacob learn that they can shed their old labels. Giorgio and Izzy each find romance, while Hana and Father Reuben attempt to discover the true purpose of the machine.”
Essentially, the small town is once again left questioning what they thought they knew about their lives, relationships, potentials, and about the Morpho itself.
Who stars in The Big Door Prize season 2?
Fan favourites Chris O’Dowd and Gabrielle Dennis return as Dusty and Cass.
They’re joined by:
- Ally Maki as Hana
- Josh Segarra as Giorgio
- Djouliet Amara as Trina
- Sammy Fourlas as Jacob
- Crystal R Fox as Izzy
- Aaron Roman Weiner as Beau
- Damon Gupton as Father Reuben
Patrick Kerr, Carrie Barrett, Elizabeth Hunter and Jim Meskimen also return to the cast, while the likes of Justine Lupe, Mary Holland, Cocoa Brown, Matt Dellapina and Melissa Ponzio all join the ensemble cast in (as yet) undisclosed roles.
What are people saying about The Big Door Prize season 2?
Teasing what’s in store for season two, The Big Door Prize showrunner David West Read tells Deadline: “This show is really about the cast and this incredible ensemble. Something really exciting about a second season is that we get to go deeper with these characters as they go deeper into themselves. And hopefully, this magical place of Deerfield and this magical cast of characters [will be something] that our audience will fall in love with and just want to spend more time with as we go on.
“The book that this show’s based on has a very specific ending. Our show doesn’t, so far. So it’s been really fun to expand the mysteries and the mythology of this Morpho machine.”
When and where can we watch The Big Door Prize season 2?
The Big Door Prize season 2 will premiere via Apple TV+ on Wednesday 24 April.
In the meantime, you can watch (or rewatch) the first season via the streaming platform.
