The Bear season 2: we finally have a UK release date, thank goodness

It was the sleeper hit of 2022. Now, after a frustratingly long wait, we are finally getting a second season of The Bear.

Fun fact: the first season of The Bear was the most-watched comedy series in the history of FX, boasting that oh-so-rare 100% ‘fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

All about an ailing Chicago sandwich shop, it told the story of Carmy Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White), a celebrated chef who returns home to save the family business after the suicide of his brother. A world away from the glitzy restaurants he’s used to, Carmy finds the reality of owning a small business to be… well, to be utterly soul-crushing, to be honest. Especially as everyone – from the rough-around-the-edges kitchen staff to his emotionally distant relatives – is still grappling with their own grief.

It was chaotic, compelling and incredibly tense, too. Overwhelmingly, though, this indie-feeling show was a wildly original workplace drama – and one that hammers home the importance of chosen family. So, yes, we lost our minds a little bit when the show’s second season was released in the US back in June (to overwhelmingly positive reviews, of course), while we here in the UK were forced to sit and twiddle our thumbs.

Now, at long last, our wait is over: The Bear season 2 will drop via Disney+ on 19 July.

What is The Bear season 2 about?

As you likely guessed from the trailer above, the second season of the hit dramedy focuses on Carmy and the team’s mission to reopen the former Original Beef of Chicagoland in a three-month turnaround.

“We’re trying to build out the restaurant that Carmy has imagined for a long time; he’s turning The Beef into something a bit more elegant,” White explains to Esquire

“I think the really interesting thing about Carmy’s arc in season two is that he has the opportunity to get everything that he wanted when we met him, and the question becomes, Is that enough? Is that going to make him happy? Is that going to bring him joy?

“Joy and inspiration are the big themes in the second season, and not just for Carmy, but also for Sydney, Marcus and Richie.”

Who stars in The Bear season 2?

Shameless’s White is joined once again by Ayo Edebiri, Lionel Boyce, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Liza Colón-Zayas, Edwin Lee Gibson and Abby Elliott.

Molly Gordon, meanwhile, joins the series as a mysterious figure from Carmy’s past – while the one and only Will Poulter (Midsommar) will appear as a chef from Copenhagen, Denmark.

This season’s guest stars include such dazzling names as Bob Odenkirk, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sarah Paulson and stand-up comic John Mulaney.

What are people saying about The Bear season 2?

According to Deadline, the season two opening episode of The Bear has already proven the most-watched premiere of any FX show on the streaming platform.

And, sure, some have criticised it for offering a less-than-realistic portrayal of Chicago, but everything else about the show has been universally praised (again, it has a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes).

When can we watch The Bear season 2?

The Bear season 2 will drop in the UK via Disney+ on 19 July.
