Here’s everything you need to know about the BBC’s new drama, Ten Pound Poms

There’s nothing quite like a meaty period drama – especially when it’s a meaty period drama created by Bafta-winning Danny Brocklehurst (Brassic; Ordinary Lies) and produced by Eleven, the team behind the award-winning Sex Education.

It’s an oddly specific formula, true, but it’s one that can be found in the BBC’s Ten Pound Poms. And, as ever, we’re here to tell you everything you need to know about the starry new series.

Buckle up…

What’s Ten Pound Poms about?

The year is 1956 and, in a gloomy post-war Britain, a group of people are offered the chance to embark on a life-altering adventure in sun-soaked Australia… for the princely sum of a tenner.

They’ve been promised better housing, better job prospects and a better quality of life by the sea. However, it’s not long before the new arrivals discover that life down under isn’t the idyllic dream they’ve been sold. As immigrants in a brave new world, they are forced to make the best of their situation – in spite of the poor living conditions at the migrant hostel and local attitudes towards the “poms”.

This six-part series, then, sets out to “follow their triumphs and pitfalls as they adapt to a new life in a new country, far from Britain and familiarity”, promises the synopsis.

Who stars in Ten Pound Poms?

Faye Marsay (Game Of Thrones; Black Mirror) and Warren Brown (The Responder; Luther) lead the cast of this new drama as Annie and Terry Roberts, a married couple who are desperate to make the best of their new Australian home for their family.

Our Girl’s Michelle Keegan, meanwhile, steps into the shoes of Kate, a young nurse who arrives without her fiancé and will do whatever it takes to try and rewrite her devastating past.

They are joined by:

  • Leon Ford as Bill, a man who has lost his family business back home and is so desperate to prove he’s living the Australian dream that he’ll stop at nothing in order to get a lifestyle he can’t sustain.
  • Declan Coyle as Stevie, a teen from a troubled background who hopes to use this new adventure to escape his oppressive father.
  • Rob Collins as Ron, an Indigenous Australian war veteran who struggles with feeling like an outsider in his own country.

David Field, Stephen Curry, Hattie Hook, Finn Treacy and Emma Hamilton round out the cast.

Ten Pounds Poms demands an ensemble cast that we are always rooting for, actors we love and want to succeed,” says Brocklehurst.

“I am thrilled to have found those actors.”

What are people saying about Ten Pound Poms?

“It is a delight to welcome so much exciting Australian talent as well as working with the brilliant Faye and Warren for the first time,” says Brocklehurst of the project.

“This is my third outing with the wonderful Michelle Keegan and I’m positive we have made another winner together.”
