Will they? Won’t they? Should they? Shouldn’t they? Say hello to Smothered, the new romcom series by Schitt’s Creek writer Monica Heisey.

Everyone is basically in agreement that Schitt’s Creek is one of the most perfect comedy series of all time, right? So, when we learned that screenwriter Monica Heisey – who helped pen the iconic series about the Rose family, as well as her whipsmart novel Really Good, Actually – is the proud creator of a new romcom series for Sky Comedy, you better believe our ears pricked up.

Set in London, Smothered is a six-episode series all about (you guessed it) love. This, however, is not your typical romcom, as it juggles hook-ups, drunken nights in karaoke booths, emotional baggage in all its forms, and the overwhelming pressures of modern dating.

Watch the trailer for Smothered below:

It looks every bit as chaotic as it does cute, and we’re sold, quite frankly.

If you still need convincing, here’s what you need to know about the series.

What is Smothered about?

As per the official plot synopsis, Smothered follows the fiercely independent Sammy, a woman who is – relatable content incoming – wholeheartedly sick of dating apps and immature men.

Tom, meanwhile, is a warm-hearted guy who has always abhorred ‘swipe right’ culture. When fate throws them into one another’s paths on a drunken night out, it’s not long before they’re drunkenly serenading one another in a karaoke booth and… well, yeah, hooking up.

The chemistry is off the charts and the sex is phenomenal. And so the duo agree to a no-strings-attached affair for three weeks – on the condition that they never speak again once it’s over. Ever.

Can you guess what happens next? The inevitable, of course. But can a great connection like Sammy and Tom’s ever hope to flourish outside of all of that pasta-in-bed magic? Especially when she learns that there’s another woman in his life already?

Who stars in Smothered?

Danielle Vitalis and Jon Pointing lead this one as Sammy and Tom. They are joined by a pleasantly starry cast, too: think Aisling Bea, Rebecca Lucy Taylor (aka Self Esteem), Blair Underwood, Jordan Stephens and Lisa Hammond, to drop just a few names.

What are people saying about Smothered?

Heisey, for one, is incredibly excited about the new series. “As a superfan of romantic comedies, it’s been a dream come true to get a crack at one myself, especially with such a talented cast and crew,” she said.

Where and when can I watch Smothered?

Smothered is due to drop on Sky Comedy and NOW on 7 December, so be sure to reserve a spot on the sofa accordingly.
