A new six-episode comedy is on its way starring and co-written by Rosie Jones, and it’s safe to say we’re excited.

Belly laughs are hard to come by. You know, the ones that catch you off guard, as they burst out before you can stop them? But we’re pretty certain we’ll be left in hysterics at Rosie Jones’s new crime comedy, Disability Benefits.

If you didn’t catch Jones’s award-winning Comedy Blap of the same name – it’s a short available online now – well, you’re in for a treat.

It’s surprising that it’s taken this long for Jones to get snapped up for her own sitcom, but she’s back with Channel 4 after the success of her documentary about living with cerebral palsy, Am I A R*tard.

Here’s everything we know so far…

What is Disability Benefits about?

The plot details have arrived and the synopsis is giving us so much to look forward to.

A young woman Emily (played by Jones) has had her disability benefits cut after being made redundant and is looking for a way to kill time and make money. So, she decides to build an illegal drug empire and start dealing on the streets. She’s got nothing else to lose, right?

Emily’s described as incredibly smart, funny and sharp – everything we know and love about Jones on The Last Leg or 8 Out Of 10 Cats.

Everyone underestimates Emily and more fool them. They patronise and overlook her, and Emily uses it as the perfect disguise to start playing the broken system that failed her. Need way say more? We’re sold.

Jones is getting the band back together from the Comedy Blap and working with Peter Fellows again to write the six-episode series. At the moment, there is no confirmed release date and no other cast members have been announced yet.

It has always been my dream to have my own sitcom

Rosie Jones

Jones was equally thrilled by the news, as she gushed on X (formerly known as Twitter): “I can’t quite believe I’m saying this, but Disability Benefits is going to be a series! I have my own sitcom! Sh** the bed! I’m so, so pleased to be working with Channel 4 on this. Now, let’s celebrate!!”

Naturally, the comments were filled with messages of delight, with one user replying: “Congratulations Rosie, can’t wait to see it!”

As a second agreed: “Bloody brilliant! Congratulations I’ve just got round to watching Am I A R*tard and it was fabulous. We need more Rosie!”

We always need more Rosie Jones, and thankfully our prayers will soon be answered.
