From Line Of Duty to The Responder and Karen Pirie: why do we have such an insatiable desire for police dramas?

Police dramas are the backbone of British television, but what if our understanding of the genre needs rethinking in light of the realities of the Metropolitan police, asks entertainment writer Morgan Cormack.
Line Of Duty, Bodyguard, Shetland, Netflix’s The Sinner, ITV’s Unforgotten, The Tower, True Detective, Vigil, Mare Of Easttown – the list of recently celebrated police-based dramas is a lengthy one.
Whether it’s a gritty, hard-faced detective like Happy Valley’s Sergeant Catherine Cawood (played by Sarah Lancashire) or even, a lovable old soul in the form of BBC One’s Baptiste (played by Tchéky Karyo) if you name a crime drama – the chances are, you’ve likely torn through many of them during a gloriously long binge-watch.
