Are you a Bad Neighbours fan? Then you need to watch Platonic, aka your favourite new TV comedy…
There’s no getting away from the fact that TV has felt incredibly heavy of late, so Platonic – starring Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen – should come as a welcome breath of fresh air.
The new comedy, premiering 24 May, treads familiar ground, asking – much like When Harry Met Sally before it – the age-old question: is it possible for a man and woman to be just friends?
Unlike When Harry Met Sally, though, it seems Platonic will be answering that question with a resounding, ‘Hell, yes – of course they can!’
Watch the trailer for Platonic below:
Every bit as fun and frothy as a strawberry milkshake (albeit one with a slug or two of vodka in it), here’s what you need to know about the starry new series.
What is the plot of Platonic?
Co-created and directed by Nicholas Stoller of Bad Neighbors fame, the series follows Sylvia, an increasingly disillusioned lawyer-turned-stay-at-home mum. Her kids are growing more and more independent, her days feel oddly empty and life is just sort of… well, ticking along.
When she learns that her estranged best friend, Will, has gotten a divorce, though, things kick into gear.
“Men and women don’t really hang out at our age,” she muses, before meeting her old pal for a very awkward coffee date.
It’s not long before the duo are falling back into old habits, using one another to distract themselves from their (whisper it) mutual midlife crises.
Drugs are taken, shots are downed, houses are broken into and lizards are kidnapped/rescued, depending on who you ask. Patio doors are smashed, mistake upon mistake is made and feelings are laid cold and naked on the floor, Natalie Imbruglia’s Torn-style.
Basically, Will and Sylvia’s all-consuming friendship is every bit as messy and destructive as you might expect from the Bad Neighbours gang – but one thing it never does is cross that line.
“I know that Will and Sylvia are not fucking,” says the latter’s husband at one point, “but it almost feels like they’re getting off on the fact that they could be fucking.”
Hmm.
Who stars in Platonic?
Bad Neighbours co-stars Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen reunite as Sylvia and Will respectively in this one, and the duo effortlessly exude the easy chemistry of a truly lived-in friendship.

They are joined by:
- Luke MacFarlane as Charlie, Sylvia’s overwhelmingly patient husband
- Tre Hale as Andy, Will’s business partner
- Carla Gallo as Katie, Sylvia’s new best friend
- Andrew Lopez as Reggie, the main investor in Will’s brewery
Alisha Wainwright (Raising Dion) and Janet Varney (The Legend Of Korra) also star.
A pretty stellar cast, right?
How many episodes are in Platonic?
The series will consist of 10 30-minute episodes, and further seasons are planned.
Much like the anthology series Modern Love, however, each season of Platonic will focus on a different couple.
When and where can we watch Platonic?
Platonic will land on Apple TV+ on 24 May, with the first three episodes of the series released simultaneously.
The rest of the series will be released on a weekly basis until 12 July, giving us the perfect blend of bingeing and classic watercooler TV.
