I really wish I could leave it there, but the entire premise – or, shall I say, the tension – is based around Noah’s Jewish family and congregation, so its representation of Jewish people needs to be discussed.

It’s not all bad. To be honest, I love seeing Jewishness represented on screen, in whatever form it takes. There are multiple characters who wear Magen Davids (Star of David necklaces, like mine), there’s Yiddish slang and Hebrew prayers, there’s Jewish humour in abundance and there’s a healthy dose of Haim on the soundtrack. Many of the Jewish jokes poke fun at our community, and I’m not necessarily opposed to that. There’s the rabbi who says that Jews need to marry Jews because we need to repopulate the community (my grandparents would’ve definitely agreed), and there’s the scene where the Jewish mothers queue in front of the hot rabbi to introduce their daughters (my mum would have no shame in doing this). I’m not so easily offended that I can’t see the truth in some of these stereotypes and be able to laugh at them.

What did bother me, however, was how all the Jewish women are portrayed. There’s Noah’s ex, Rebecca, who rummages through his drawers to find an engagement ring and wears it without him even popping the question (truly bonkers behaviour). There’s Noah’s uptight, annoying sister-in-law Esther, whose husband, Sasha, admits he only married because she’s not fun. Then, of course, there’s Bina, Noah’s mother, who is the most extreme version of the Jewish mother stereotype you’ve ever seen. She’s overbearing, rude and unwelcoming to non-Jews, with a constant furrowed brow and an exaggerated Russian accent.

This is especially problematic when the controlling, no-fun, neurotic Jewish women are contrasted against the easy-going, life-of-the-party, hot, blonde ‘shiksas’ in Joanne and her sister Morgan (don’t even get me started on Morgan’s continuous remarks that we’re all supposed to brush under the carpet). The message appears to be this: cute, lovely Jewish men need to be rescued by fun-loving blonde women in order to escape the shackles of an unfulfilling, entrapping Jewish relationship.

The series was created by real-life podcaster Erin Foster, and is loosely based on her own love story with a “nice Jewish boy”. When asked about the depiction of Jewish women in the show for an interview with Hey Alma, she said: “It wasn’t really something I was thinking about too much.” And it shows. Look, I’m all for interfaith relationships (I’m in one), and these stories deserve to be told just as much as any other. Foster clearly loved Jews and Jewish culture so much that she converted to Judaism. But did this love story really need to come at the expense of Jewish women? Many of us have gone our whole lives feeling undesirable – one American study found that up to 78% of Jewish women struggle with body image. Did we really need another show to tell us – and the world – that we’re the worst?
