There’s less than a month to go until season five of Netflix’s The Crown makes its way to our screens, and now we finally have a trailer to feast our eyes on.
It feels like ages since we first found out Imelda Staunton would be taking over the role of Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown season five – but now, we finally have our first look at Staunton and her fellow castmates in action.
That’s right: we finally have a trailer for the fifth instalment of Netflix’s hit series, and if it tells us anything about what to expect from season five, it’s plenty of drama.
Opening with shots of the Windsor Castle fire – one of the many events which led to the Queen deeming 1992 an “annus horriblis” – the trailer flicks between a series of different storylines, from the end of Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s relationship to the romance between the former and Camilla Parker Bowles.
We also got a glimpse of The Crown’s take on that revenge dress as well as Princess Diana’s controversial BBC interview with Martin Bashir.
You can check out the full trailer below:
If one thing’s for certain, The Crown season five isn’t going to shy away from any of the big events that took place in and around the royal family during the 1990s. And with the Queen’s recent death casting a spotlight on the royal family and its history, it seems likely that this season of The Crown will prove particularly popular.
Keep reading to check out everything else we know about the series ahead of its release next month.
Who will star in The Crown season 5?
Season five marks the arrival of a new ensemble cast – and it does not disappoint.
To start, Imelda Staunton will be taking over the role of Queen Elizabeth II from Olivia Colman.
In a statement posted on Twitter when her casting was first announced, the award-winning actor said she felt “honoured” to take over the role and bring the series to its conclusion.
“I have loved watching The Crown from the very start,” she said. “As an actor it was a joy to see how both Claire Foy and Olivia Colman brought something special and unique to Peter Morgan’s scripts.”
Also joining the cast for season five are Lesley Manville, who will play Princess Margaret; Johnny Lee Miller, who will play John Major; Jonathan Pryce, who will take over the role of Prince Philip from Tobias Menzies; and Dominic West, who will play Prince Charles.
Elizabeth Debicki has also been confirmed to be taking over the role of Princess Diana from Emma Corrin, but that doesn’t mean we’ll be waving goodbye to the latter for good.
After her award-winning portrayal of Princess Diana in the last season, it’s been reported that The Crown’s creators are looking at ways to bring Corrin back to the show for the next season through flashbacks to the icon’s younger years – although we’ll have to wait and see whether this is actually the case when the show hits our screens.
Other notable names joining The Crown family include Emily In Paris’ Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu who will play Monique Ritz, widow of The Ritz hotel’s former owner Charles Ritz who sold his family-named Paris hotel to Mohamed Al Fayed in 1979. The Ritz is where Diana, Princess of Wales and Dodi Fayed, Mohamed’s son, spent their last night before they were killed in a fatal car crash in August 1997.
Johnny Lee Miller – oh he of Trainspotting, Hackers, and Mansfield Park fame – will also be joining the cast as John Major.
And in other news, the teenage Prince William will be played by 13-year-old Senan West. Sound familiar? That’s because he’s the real-life son of Dominic West, who has taken over from Josh O’Conner as Prince Charles.
Senan West is diving in at the deep end too, because his onscreen debut in the final episodes of the season will be his first-ever TV role.
What will The Crown season 5 be about?
Although it was once believed that The Crown season five would be the show’s last season, we now know the show’s team are working on a season six, which will take the story up to the early 2000s, as per Deadline.
With this in mind, it’s possible that season five could either end on Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ divorce (which was finalised in 1996), or with Princess Diana’s death in 1997, leaving the fallout of the tragedy to be explored in season six.
Other events which are likely to be included are the events of 1992, which the Queen herself described as an “annus horribilis”.
Not only did this year mark the start of Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ separation and the publication of the former’s book Diana: Her True Story, but it also saw the separation of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, a fire at Windsor Castle and the finalisation of Princess Anne’s divorce from Mark Phillips.

What else do we know about The Crown season 5?
Back in the summer, Netflix released two images from the set of The Crown season five, giving fans their first-look at Elizabeth Debicki and Dominic West in action as Princess Diana and Prince Charles.
The shots, which were released via the show’s official Twitter account in August, show West stood outdoors in an olive-coloured suit and tie, while Debicki is pictured lying down on a sofa with a letter lying in her lap.
The new images came just weeks after the first image of Imelda Staunton in action as Queen Elizabeth II was released, depicting her in a yellow dress and carrying the Queen’s signature black handbag.
Then, earlier this month, Netflix released a series of first-look images from the new season – and it’s safe to say they got us pretty excited.
The images – which were released via Netflix’s editorial platform Tudum – show many of the show’s new cast members in action, including Dominic West and Elizabeth Debicki as Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
They also give us our first look at Imelda Staunton as the late Queen Elizabeth II, and Lesley Manville as the Queen’s sister, Princess Margaret. You can check a few of them out below:
