If you haven’t watched it yet, you need to get involved. Not only is it an important case for people to understand, but it’s also simply excellent television.
Mr Bates Vs The Post Office is on everyone’s lips and minds this month, and for good reason.
A drama all about the Post Office scandal, the series has shaken up our typically sleepy January TV schedules and awakened the British public to a grave miscarriage of justice.
Want to find out more? Here’s everything you need to know, from the cast to where you can tune in.
What is Mr Bates Vs the Post Office about?
Written by Gwyneth Hughes (Vanity Fair, Honour, Tom Jones), directed by James Strong (Broadchurch, Doctor Who) and produced by ITV Studios and Little Gem, Mr Bates Vs the Post Office is a dramatisation of what has been described as the most widespread miscarriage of justice in legal history.
After the defective Horizon accounting software system saw hundreds of innocent subpostmasters wrongly accused of fraud, theft and false accounting, many of these workers were prosecuted. Some were even sentenced to prison for crimes they’d never committed. Marriages were destroyed and lives were even lost.
Then, in September 2009, subpostmaster Alan Bates set up the Justice for Subpostmasters Alliance (JFSA) in an attempt to get those in power to set things right.
