The BBC are set to release a sequel to the hit crime-drama Magpie Murders, so here’s everything we know so far about Moonflower Murders.

Cosy crime lovers, this one’s for you. If you’re already missing the crime-solving skills of Susan Ryeland in Magpie Murders, we have some good news. The BBC is bringing us a sequel based on the second novel in Anthony Horowitz’s Susan Ryeland series.

Much like the books, the six-part series Moonflower Murders will pick up where Magpie Murders left off, with many of the original cast returning to their roles. Want to learn more? Here’s everything we know so far about the sequel, including some first-look images at the upcoming crime drama.

What is the plot of Moonflower Murders?

Susan has left publishing and is living in Crete with her long-time boyfriend, Andreas. But her idyllic new life is disturbed by the shadow of a murder committed at a British country hotel eight years ago. Alan Conway visited the hotel and wrote a novel based on what happened there, but then Cecily Treherne, the young woman who helps run the hotel, read the book and believed the wrong man had been arrested. Now she has disappeared…

“Can Susan uncover the secret hidden in the book and find Cecily before it is too late?”

Who stars in Moonflower Murders?

Returning in their roles from Magpie Murders are Lesley Manville (The Crown) as book editor turned sleuth Susan and Timothy McMullan (Patrick Melrose, The Crown) as famous literary detective Atticus Pünd.

Alongside Manville and McMullan, returning members of the original cast include Alexandros Logothetis (The Island) as Andreas, Daniel Mays (Des) as Locke/Chubb, Claire Rushbrook (Wilderness) as Kate, Conleth Hill (Game Of Thrones) as Alan Conway, Matthew Beard (Dracula) as James and Sanjeev Kohli (River City) as Sajid Khan.

And we can expect to see some new faces, too. New cast members include Mark Gatiss (Sherlock, Nolly) as Parris/Berlin, Rosalie Craig (Anatomy Of A Scandal, The Queen’s Gambit) as Lisa/Melissa, Pippa Bennett-Warner (Gangs Of London) as Madeline and Adrian Rawlins (Slow Horses) as Lawrence/Lance.

Speaking about the new series, Horowitz said: “I’ve been watching the filming of Moonflower Murders with joy. We’re back with the same cast… but this time we’ve got a whole new box of tricks to present as literary editor Susan Ryeland untangles another book within a book and another series of unfathomable murders. I can’t wait to show it to our audience.”

When will Moonflower Murders be released?

There’s no confirmed release date for the series just yet but in the meantime, you can catch up on Magpie Murders on BBC iPlayer.
