The one and only Lizzo is getting her very own BBC documentary. It’s about damn time.

Her name – just two syllables long – is synonymous with musical greatness. Before she was Lizzo, though, she was the Minnesota kid who sang with her mum in church, played flute like nobody’s business, and was bullied relentlessly by her peers.

Now, the BBC is bringing Melissa Viviane Jefferson’s inspiring story to life on our screens for the very first time.

Here’s what you need to know about Love, Lizzo.

What is Love, Lizzo about?

As per the official synopsis, this documentary details “the journey of a trailblazing superstar who has become the movement the world desperately needed just by being herself”.

And, yes, you better believe it looks good as hell.

Watch the trailer for Love, Lizzo below:

“No matter what part of my story you come in at, I’m always chasing the music,” the rapper and singer says at the beginning of the trailer.

“Y’all have no idea how close I was to this not being a thing.”

Promising an “intimate look into the moments that shaped her,” the documentary shows us how Lizzo penned songs in her childhood Detroit bedroom, never dreaming anyone would ever listen to them.

“Nobody was trying to sign a fat, Black girl that rapped, sang and played the flute,” she says, matter-of-factly.

As we all know, though, Lizzo never gave up.

Today, she has four studio albums, two mixtapes, two extended plays, 23 singles and three promotional singles to her name – as well as a few Hollywood performances under her belt. And she shows no signs of slowing down, either.

“Finally telling my story, MY WAY,” she said of her documentary,

What are people saying about Love, Lizzo?

“Growing up I never dreamed I’d get to experience all of the things I’ve accomplished in my life, and I’m just getting started,” Lizzo said when the documentary was first announced.

“From Cuz I Love You [Lizzo’s major label debut studio album] to my dramatic world tour, losing and gaining love, and creating my new album Special, y’all get to see the amount of time, patience, blood, sweat and tears that went into this process,” she added in a press release.

“It takes 10 years to become an ‘overnight success’, and hopefully I can inspire other young creatives to keep going.”

Oh, we are so ready for this.

When can we watch Love, Lizzo?

Love, Lizzo will air 9.45pm, Sunday 4 June on BBC Three.
