Netflix’s KAOS is the darkly comedic twist on the Greek mythos we didn’t know we needed

Billie Piper, Jeff Goldblum and Suzy Eddie Izzard star in KAOS, the hot new series from the creator of The End Of The F***ing World.
Greek mythology continues to reign supreme as one of pop culture’s most dominant themes, so it makes sense that Netflix is getting in on the action with KAOS, a new series inspired by the legends of Zeus, Mount Olympus and the Underworld.
Much like Succession, this one spins a tale about a deeply dysfunctional family as they scheme against one another in a bid for power. KAOS, however, ups the ante by swapping mere mortals out for… well, for Greek gods. Obviously.
Hey, we’d expect nothing less from creator and writer Charlie Covell, who previously gifted us Netflix’s The End of the F***ing World.
Watch the trailer for KAOS below:
Honestly, we were sold on the premise alone – but that starry cast? Consider us obsessed.
Here’s everything you need to know, then, about KAOS.
What is the plot of KAOS?
We’re used to our Greek myths being served up Jason And The Argonauts-style; togas, swords, sandals, and oh-so-ancient vibes. KAOS, however, gives them a distinctly modern update, offering up a story about Zeus and his fellow gods in our own chaotic times.
It all kicks off when the aforementioned ruler of the gods discovers a wrinkle on his forehead, prompting him to spiral. Big time.
“Believing it to be the harbinger of an ancient prophecy which foretells his destruction, neurosis sets in: Zeus becomes convinced his fall is coming. As his paranoia takes hold, the god of gods – seeing signs everywhere – starts to dangerously self-destruct,” promises the official synopsis.
“And he’s right to be worried. Zeus’s one time friend and now prisoner, Prometheus, is orchestrating a plan to bring him down. The plan involves three disparate humans, all of whom are totally unaware of their cosmic significance or the part they must play in saving the world. No pressure. (Some pressure.)”
Who stars in KAOS?
KAOS is one of those shows that is positively overladen with talent, with none other than Jeff Goldblum stepping into the shoes of our paranoid Zeus.
He is joined by:
- Billie Piper as Cassandra, a cursed Trojan seeking refuge in Krete
- Suzy Eddie Izzard as Lachy, one of three immortal Fates
- Janet McTeer as Hera
- Nabhaan Rizwan as Dionysus
- Stephen Dillane as Prometheus
- David Thewlis as Hades
- Cliff Curtis as Poseidon
- Rakie Ayola as Persephone
- Debi Mazar as Medusa
Aurora Perrineau, Leila Farzad, and Misia Butler star as the three humans who find themselves unwittingly roped into this chaotic Greek myth. And the ensemble cast is rounded out nicely with Killian Scott, Misia Butler and Stanley Townsend.
What are people saying about KAOS?
Speaking about the project with Variety, Goldblum explains that he was drawn to the role of Zeus because “Greek myths have always addressed the entire scope of human experience, and the continuum from start till now”.
On top of that, Covell: “built a world that was amazing and fascinating – and very moving, and hilarious. It struck me right in my stomach.”
When can we watch KAOS?
KAOS will premiere on Netflix on Thursday 29 August.
