Taskmaster fans, this twist on the beloved comedy game show is brilliant. Here’s what you need to know about Junior Taskmaster…
If you’re anything like this writer, you’ll have already streamed every episode of Taskmaster available… and probably more than once, too. Thankfully, the TV gods at Channel 4 have taken pity on us at last, and provided us with a fresh new twist on the Greg Davies and Little Alex Horne favourite: Junior Taskmaster.
Oh yes, you read that right; a cohort of hilarious children will be embracing the chaos as they tackle a series of fiendishly tricky challenges. And, this time, they’ll be doing so under the watchful eye of Starstruck’s Rose Matafeo and her assistant, Mike Wozniak.
The series “will see young people aged 9 to 11 bring their fledgling wiles, athleticism and creativity to the game that recognises genius at any age”, promises the official synopsis for the eight-part series, which kick starts on Friday 8 November at 8pm.
Watch the trailer for Junior Taskmaster below:
Wholesome, hilarious perfection, right? And it’s worth noting that both Matafeo and Wozniak have appeared on the original show and finished second in their respective seasons, with the former famously hosting a funeral for her chickpea, Chick Pataki, and the latter shaving his hair off to better take on some “street toughs”. They’re Taskmaster icons, basically, and your favourite show is in very safe hands.
“To be appointed as Junior Taskmaster is one of the greatest honours of my already wildly successful career. I am greatly looking forward to the power going to my head,” says Matafeo of her new role.
Wozniak adds: “All I ever wanted to be when I grew up was a Little Alex Horne (or a regional manager for a major provider of motorway service stations), so this is literally a dream come true. I hereby vow to do my utmost to hold the office of Junior Taskmaster’s assistant in the spirit of the original Little Alex Horne: with his courage, his grit and his dignity.”
It’s worth noting that Horne, the show’s creator, has heaped praise on the new format, branding the Junior Taskmaster contestants as “both more competent and just as funny” as the usual string of adult comedians that he puts through their paces.
Anyone else booking out their Friday nights for the foreseeable?
Junior Taskmaster begins on Friday 8 November at 8pm, and will air weekly on Channel 4.
