Happy Valley creator Sally Wainwright has teamed up with the BBC for Hot Flush, a new drama centred on the lives of five women of a ‘certain age’ who come together to form a punk-rock band.

The final season of Happy Valley may have aired just last year but Bafta-winning screenwriter Sally Wainwright is already looking ahead to her next projects. We already know that her new Disney+ series Renegade Nell – starring Louisa Harland – will land on our screens later in the spring, but Wainwright has another TV show in production too.

Returning to the BBC, Wainwright will create a new drama, Hot Flush, centred on the lives of five women of a ‘certain age’ who come together to form a punk-rock band. Like Happy Valley, the new series will also be set in West Yorkshire. Here’s everything we know so far about BBC’s Hot Flush.

What will Hot Flush be about?

As mentioned, the six-part drama will focus on five women who form a band to enter a talent contest, but when they rehearse together, according to the synopsis, “they suddenly discover that they have a lot more to say than they ever imagined, and this is the way to say it”.

The series will chart their stories as they deal with stressful jobs, children, dependent parents, partners who’ve let them down and menopause. The women end up using the band as a catalyst for change in their lives – making them question everything.

As well as that, Hot Flush will also contain some long-buried secrets between the five women that could end up changing the trajectory of their lives.

Speaking about her new project, Wainwright said: “I’ve been wanting to write a series like this for a long time. It’s a celebration of women of a certain age and all the life stuff they suddenly find themselves negotiating/dealing with. The show is also my own personal homage to Rock Follies of 77, and the feisty Little Ladies who woke me up to what I wanted to do with my life when I was 13.”

Not much else is known about Hot Flush with cast details and a release date being kept under wraps for now but with Sally Wainwright at the helm, we’re willing to wait.
