Here’s what you need to know about Grotesquerie.
It’s official; the man who brought us such gems as Pose, The People v OJ Simpson and American Horror Story is at it again – and, this time, he’s delivering a seriously twisted take on the classic detective drama.
As per the demands of the genre, Ryan Murphy’s new series, Grotesquerie, focuses on yet another troubled detective on the hunt for a twisted killer. As you might expect from the title though, this story quickly lurches into the world of horror – not least of all because the person behind the heinous crimes seems to be driven by something truly “hellish”.

Suitably shaken? Here’s everything you need to know about the series.
What’s Grotesquerie about?
When a small community becomes plagued by murder most foul, it’s up to Detective Lois Tryon to unmask the killer. “These crimes are eerily personal, as if someone – something – is taunting her,” promises the official synopsis, which adds that Tryon is already grappling “with a strained relationship with her daughter, a husband in long-term hospital care and her own inner demons”.
She needs help, essentially. And so, unsure of where to turn, she begins to lean hard upon “Sister Megan, a nun and journalist with the Catholic Guardian”.
“Sister Megan, with her own difficult past, has seen the worst of humanity, yet she still believes in its capacity for good. Lois, on the other hand, fears the world is succumbing to evil. As Lois and Sister Megan string together clues, they find themselves ensnared in a sinister web that only seems to raise more questions than answers,” it finishes.
Who stars in Grotesquerie?
The series stars Niecy Nash-Betts as Detective Lois Tryon and Micaela Diamond as the enigmatic Sister Megan.
They’re joined by:
- Courtney B. Vance
- Lesley Manville
- Nicholas Alexander Chavez
- Raven Goodwin
- Travis Kelce
What are people saying about Grotesquerie?
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about her role in the series, Nash-Betts says: “What I can say is that I’ve never played this character before. I can say that Ryan Murphy is a genius. I can say that Ryan Murphy will forever have me at hello. This series is going to be so delicious to fans of Ryan and fans of mine. I would coin it as a satiating darkness that you have to bear witness to.”
When and where can we watch Grotesquerie in the UK?
The series will premiere with the first two of its 10 episodes on Thursday 26 September exclusively on Disney+.
