Grey’s Anatomy season 20: we’re finally getting new episodes of the medical drama – with Ellen Pompeo, no less!

It’s been a long time coming, but the UK will soon be able to head back to Grey Sloan Hospital in Grey’s Anatomy season 20.

If you’re in the mood for a series filled to the brim with impossibly attractive people in surprisingly well-fitting scrubs, you’re in luck! The much-anticipated return of Grey’s Anatomy is finally upon us, with its 20th season (yes, really) poised to drop on Disney+ this month.

This season of Grey’s will be markedly different to all those that have come before it, as it’s the very first not to feature Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) as a series regular.

While her character said goodbye in season 19, longtime fans of the show needn’t fear: much as Vanessa Redgrave’s Jennifer Worth still narrates Call The Midwife (despite the fact her on-screen counterpart left the show many seasons ago), Pompeo will still be voicing the intros and outros to each episode. And she will appear in four episodes of season 20, too – hopefully in a less dark and twisty way than we’ve become used to over the years. Hell, if anyone can use a little happiness, it’s Meredith ‘Bad Luck Follows Me Wherever I Go’ Grey.

Intrigued? Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming episodes.

What is Grey’s Anatomy season 20 about?

As ever and always, the series will follow “the team of doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial who are faced with life-or-death decisions on a daily basis”, as per the official synopsis.

“They seek comfort from one another, and, at times, more than just friendship. Together they discover that neither medicine nor relationships can be defined in black and white.”

So, expect a lot of medical jargon, high-octane drama and sexual tension. Not necessarily in that order.

Who will star in Grey’s Anatomy season 20?

Pompeo may be stepping out of the limelight, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be more than enough doctors and interns to root for this time around.

Chandra Wilson, for starters, is back as our beloved Dr Miranda Bailey, while James Pickens Jr will be reprising his role as Dr Richard Webber.

We have a ragtag group of interns in the form of Lucas (Niko Terho), as well as Blue (Harry Shum Jr), Jules (Adelaide Kane), Mika (Midori Francis) and Simone (Alexis Floyd) – all of whom face an uncertain future after the events of last season.

We will also see the return of:

  • Kevin McKidd as Owen Hunt
  • Kim Raver as Teddy Altman
  • Caterina Scorsone as Amelia Shepherd
  • Camilla Luddington as Jo Wilson
  • Scott Speedman as Nick Marsh
  • Chris Carmack as Atticus ‘Link’ Lincoln
  • Anthony Hill as Winston Ndugu
  • Jake Borelli as Levi Schmitt
  • Jessica Capshaw as Dr Arizona Robbins
  • Alex Landi as Dr Nico Kim

Natalie Morales and Freddy Miyares will also be joining the cast as a paediatric surgeon and a likeable patient, respectively.

What are people saying about Grey’s Anatomy season 20?

Succeeding Krista Vernoff as the series showrunner, Meg Marinis has promised that this season will take things “back to basics” with a surprising reset twist.

More importantly, she told Deadline that fans needn’t worry about Meredith Grey being written out of the show permanently.

“Her status is that she’s always a huge part of the show. I don’t know the answer to your question about why they choose to list it that way. But we have an open-door policy with her. When she is able to be here, we welcome her with open arms. We work with her schedule, she still does the voice-over. She was a huge part of the premiere for me, she and I have a great relationship. She’s constantly in my head, her voice. She cares very deeply for the show and even in the episodes that she’s not in, she’s interested to know what’s happening. So, you’ll see her come and go and she will always remain a very important part to the show.”

When can we watch Grey’s Anatomy season 20?

The season 20 premiere of Grey’s Anatomy will drop via Disney+ on Thursday 28 March, with episodes dropping weekly on Thursdays thereafter.
