Sex Education’s Aimee Lou Wood will make her screenwriting debut in the BBC’s Film Club. Here’s everything we know about the project so far.
Every Thursday at 9pm, Tom and Evie watch a film together in her garage. Evie lovingly decorates the space to match the film of the week: from a yellow brick road for The Wizard Of Oz to a space craft for Alien. It’s magical. They’re there for the love of the movies. Or at least, that’s what they tell themselves.
That’s the heartwarming premise of freshly-announced BBC romcom Film Club, which marks the screenwriting debut of none other than Bafta-winning actor Aimee Lou Wood.
The show has already been hailed as “a piercingly funny and utterly heart-warming screenwriting debut from two of Britain’s most exciting voices”. So what exactly can we expect from Film Club?
What is the plot of Film Club?
As we’ve established, Tom and Evie are supposedly “just friends”. In reality, Tom is madly in love with Evie. What he doesn’t know is that Evie is in love with him, too. But when Tom accepts a job at the other end of the country, their happily-ever-after comes under threat. He’s leaving in six weeks. That means Evie has six film clubs left to tell Tom how she feels, or risk losing him forever.
Evie is going to have to navigate all of this amid the chaos of her family home – including her eccentric and unconventional mother Suz and her younger sister Izzy.

Who will star in Film Club?
Wood will take on the lead role of Evie in the six-part series, which is co-written by Life After Life’s Ralph Davis and made by Gaumont (the company behind Obsession and For Her Sins) for BBC Three. Further casting – including who will play Tom – has yet to be announced.
“When Ralph and I met a decade ago we knew pretty much instantly that we wanted to create something together and this feels deeply organic and idiosyncratic and right,” Wood said of the announcement. “Jamie at Gaumont has been the most incredible collaborator and the BBC is the perfect home. Three of the most essential things to me have always been writing stories, watching films and acting, so the fact I get to write a story ABOUT watching films AND act in it is beyond joyful.”
When will Film Club be available to watch?
As the series has only just been announced, we can expect a late 2024 or even early 2025 release date for Film Club. Nevertheless, we can’t wait to see the tender and funny journey play out on screen. In the meantime, here are some of the best contemporary romcoms to sink your teeth into.
