Aimee Lou Wood flexes her comic muscles in this new BBC series about a dysfunctional relationship between a father and daughter. Here’s why you should get involved…
It’s fair to say that Aimee Lou Wood is having a very, very good year.
She has just finished filming the highly-anticipated third series of The White Lotus, which will be set, this time, at a luxury resort in Thailand. And in a recent Instagram post called the experience: “huge, long, scary, hard, brilliant, overwhelming, maddening, singular, wonderful, terrifying and profound.”
The Sex Education star will also be making her screenwriting debut in BBC romcom series Film Club, where she plays Evie, who is madly in love with best friend, Tom, but is unaware that he’s also in love with her. Could it be more perfect?
Perhaps! As Aimee Lou is currently lighting up in iPlayer star the excellently titled upcoming Daddy Issues, about a hedonistic young woman who asks her dad to move in with her after a particularly messy weekend.
The six-part comedy sounds like everything we want to watch this weekend, and luckily you can binge all six episodes right now. Here’s what to expect…

What is the plot of Daddy Issues?
The show will centre on the relationship between Gemma (Wood) and her hapless dad Malcolm (played by David Morrissey). And neither are in a great place.
Gemma has discovered that she’s pregnant after a random one-night stand, while Malcolm is struggling with life (including, but not limited to: how to load a washing machine, change the wifi password and boil an egg) after his wife left him with their savings to “Eat Pray Love her way around the world”. So when Gemma’s flatmate moves out, leaving her broke and alone, she asks her dad to move in for support. Which sounds like a good idea in theory…
As the BBC puts it: “From dating disasters and failed romances through to toxic friendships and messy family dynamics, plus a dangerously sociopathic antenatal teacher, Daddy Issues is an affectionate heart-warming story between father and daughter and the reality of facing up to parenthood – at any stage of life.”

Who will star in Daddy Issues?
Moordale School alumna Aimee Lou Wood will take the lead alongside acclaimed British actor David Morrissey (if you haven’t yet watched him in the BBC’s Sherwood, I urge you to rectify that), in a series created by Danielle Ward (who also worked on Brassic).
“It had been a very long time since a script made me laugh out loud,” says Aimee Lou. “Danielle’s did exactly that. Then when I heard David was involved, I was even more excited. He’s someone I have admired throughout my life. Watching shows like Blackpool and Red Riding when I was younger fuelled my interest in acting, so it feels surreal and amazing to be working with someone I class as a legend and inspiration.”
Joining Wood and Morrissey is a cast including Sharon Rooney (Barbie) as Gemma’s sister Catherine who is in prison, David Fynn (Am I Being Unreasonable?), Sarah Hadland (Miranda) and Taj Atwal (Hullraisers).
