The Belfast-set police drama will be returning for a second season – here’s what we know so far.

Set in Belfast, Blue Lights follows Grace, Annie and Tommy, a trio of probationary police officers on the beat, grappling with the extraordinary demands of their new job.

The series, co-written by Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson, emerged as a brilliant cop show in its own right, thanks to a taut plot, plenty of dark humour, a strong ensemble cast and some truly shocking moments that could rival Line Of DutyBlue Lights was within the top ten new drama series of 2023 and launched to more than seven million viewers.

Now, the BBC has announced that Blue Lights is set to return for a second season, with many of the original cast members set to reprise their roles.

“Belfast is a vibrant, dynamic and complex place and we have a wealth of stories yet to come from our characters,” said Stephen Wright, the show’s executive producer. “We can’t wait to bring these to the fans.”

Here’s what we know so far about season two of Blue Lights, including when we can expect the series to land on our screens.

What will Blue Lights season two be about?

Plot details about the upcoming instalments are scarce, but we can surely expect the new season to pick up some of the loose threads from the season one finale (what was Grace’s partner Stevie about to say to her before he got interrupted by a call from HQ? And will Tommy regret that major decision he made in the finale?).

Who is in the cast of Blue Lights season two?

Siân Brooke (Grace), Martin McCann (Stevie), Katherine Devlin (Annie), Nathan Braniff (Tommy), Joanne Crawford (Helen), Andi Osho (Sandra) and Hannah McClean (Jen).

Also set to return are Paddy Jenkins (Happy Kelly), Desmond Eastwood (Murray Canning), Jonathan Harden (Jonty) and Andrea Irvine (Nicola Robinson).

Joining them for the second series is Frank Blake as new Constable Shane Bradley, along with Seamus O’Hara as Lee Thompson, Seána Kerslake as his sister Mags and Dearbhláile McKinney playing Constable Aisling Byrne. Derek Thompson makes a return to his hometown of Belfast to guest star as retired police officer Robin Graham.

When will season two of Blue Lights be on TV?

The second series will be available in full on BBC iPlayer from 6am on Monday 15 April and the first episode will air at 9pm on BBC One.
