The Motherland-shaped hole in our lives is about to be filled by a hilarious spin-off series. Here’s everything we know so far about BBC’s Amandaland.

If you were devastated by the news that, after three series and a Christmas special, the Bafta award-winning series Motherland would not be returning, now is the time to dry your eyes and start getting excited again. Because, as per the BBC’s latest announcement, a brand-new spin-off is coming to our screens that focuses on Lucy Punch’s uptight yet hilarious character, Amanda.

So get ready for Amandaland. Here’s everything we know about the series so far.

What is the plot of Amandaland?

According to the official synopsis, the series will pick up following Amanda’s divorce, where she has had to downsize and up sticks to South Harlesden, or as the estate agent calls it, SoHa (but definitely not ‘the area around Wormwood Scrubs prison’).

With both Manus and Georgie now at secondary school, Amanda has to try to get her head around raising teenagers, dealing with modern motherhood horrors like teenage drinking, fake Instagram accounts and eco-anxiety. Not even a woman as certain of her parenting as Amanda can deal with these nightmares alone. Then there’s Amanda’s mother, Felicity (portrayed, once again, by Joanna Lumley), who is constantly around and completely in denial that she is, in fact, very lonely. Theirs is a slightly unhealthy co-dependent relationship based on backhanded compliments and veiled snipes about her new home.

And, after a brief spell of freedom in the original series, Anne (Philippa Dunne) is sucked back into being Amanda’s minion to help her navigate the social scene with the other parents at the children’s new school.

Who stars in Amandaland?

Leading the cast are Lucy Punch as Amanda, Joanna Lumley as Felicity and Philippa Dunne as Anne.

Joining the cast will be Samuel Anderson (Gavin & Stacey) as Mal, Siobhan McSweeney (Derry Girls) as Della, Rochenda Sandall (Line Of Duty) as Fi, Ekow Quartey (Trying) as JJ and Peter Serafinowicz (The Gentlemen) as Johannes.

And there is a stellar writing team behind AmandalandMotherland’s Holly Walsh and Helen Serafinowicz, plus Barunka O’Shaughnessy (Breeders) – which means we should be in for a real treat.

Motherland continues to be one of the most loved comedies on the BBC, and we’re so pleased we are carrying on with the story, taking the characters in a new direction and to a different postcode,” said Tanya Quershi, the BBC’s head of comedy, of the news. “Lucy, Joanna and Philippa are three of the funniest comedy actors around and we’re thrilled to have them on board.”

When and where will Amandaland be released?

The six-episode series will premier on BBC1 and BBC iPlayer at 9pm on 5 February 2025, with new episodes being released weekly.
