What is the plot of Adolescence?

Over four episodes the series will tell the story of a family whose world is upended when Jamie, their 13-year-old son, is charged with the murder of a teenage girl from school.

Graham will play Jamie’s dad and will act as his ‘appropriate adult’ (someone who supports a child or young adult if arrested or questioned by the police). Ashley Walters will play Detective Inspector Bascombe, while The Crown star Erin Doherty is the clinical psychologist working on Jamie’s case.

What marks the series apart is that it is directed by Boiling Point’s Philip Barantini, and like that film and the TV series that followed, each episode will be filmed in one continuous shot with a main character as the focus. And like the Bafta-winning restaurant drama, we expect it will be equally unflinching and intense.

As well as starring, Graham has also exec produced (alongside his wife and Matriarch Productions co-founder, Hannah Walters) and co-written (with Jack Thorne, who also wrote Best Interests, National Treasure and Help) the series. Thorne is just as excited about the casting as we are saying: “Adolescence is going great. It’s the sixth time I’ve worked with Stephen Graham, and honestly, I’ve never met a happier actor. He gets so excited. We are all in his playground and he’s giving us big pushes on the swings. I love him.”
