Twelve of the best chatty, informal and lighthearted podcasts to plug into whether you’re commuting or cleaning.
From deep dives into jaw-dropping conspiracy theories and true crime sagas to essential cultural commentary, podcasts are a great way to learn more about the world around us. Research shows that the popularity of podcasts is continuing to rise, with around 11.7 million of us tuning in to listen at least once a week, with 25–34-year-olds being the most likely to tune in.
And while we can learn a lot about the topics that matter, sometimes you just want a series you can tune into when you’re jostling for space on your commute or cleaning out your wardrobe, something that offers just the right balance of comfort and laughs – as if you’re chatting with your mates.
Thankfully, chatty and informal podcasts are in no short supply. Offering us some much-needed, lighthearted company, these podcasts make it feel like an old friend is in the room with us. Here are 12 of our favourites, including Candice Brathwaite and Coco Sarel’s beloved Closet Confessions and Miquita Oliver and Lily Allen’s new series Miss Me?
Wednesdays
Best friends and Made In Chelsea alumni Sophie Habboo and Melissa Tattam team up for a weekly dose of girl chat, solving listeners’ dilemmas and putting the world to rights while having a proper laugh at themselves.
Strangers On A Bench
This podcast does exactly what it says on the tin. Singer/songwriter Tom Rosenthal has spent the last six months approaching total strangers on park benches around London – all in the name of good conversation. And the result? An extraordinary blend of chat, intimacy and revelations. All anonymous, of course.
Now You’re Asking with Marian Keyes and Tara Flynn
Multi-award winning writer Marian Keyes teams up with actor, comedian and writer Tara Flynn to tackle those life problems we all experience. From dealing with alcoholism to getting through the laundry, nothing is off limits.
Closet Confessions
The ultimate feel-good listen, hosts Candice Brathwaite and Sarel will have you laughing, screaming and crying along with them as they air their confessions – and yours – out in the open.
Miss Me?
Join Lily Allen and Miquita Oliver twice a week for their transatlantic catch-ups, discussing everything from the highs and lows of their lives to the biggest cultural moments of the week.
The Receipts Podcast
From situationships to everyday life experiences, expect unadulterated chat with no filter from Tolly T and Audrey, a pair willing to talk about anything and everything.
@lexie
With Lexie Lombard in your ears, you’ll feel like you have a big sister on hand to guide you through moments of love, grief and everything in between.
The Girls Bathroom
This podcast has all the gossip, chat and good vibes of the very place where we so often confide in girls we’ve never even met before.
Off The Telly
Beloved TV stars Joanna Page and Natalie Cassidy chat through what they can’t stop watching, what they definitely aren’t going to bother with and what we’re tuning into at home, all with a hearty dose of humour.
Sometimes Funny Always Awkward
This podcast acknowledges that life is messy… but says we should laugh at it anyway. Join bubbly hosts Maddy MacRae and Grace Hore as they chat unfiltered about dating, sex, adulthood and being a hot mess.
Anything Goes with Emma Chamberlain
Recorded from the comfort of her bed, internet personality Emma talks at length about whatever is on her mind that week. Anything really does go on this podcast.
Exactly with Florence Given
The author of bestsellers Women Don’t Owe You Pretty and Girlcrush is on hand to help you explore topics such as sex, envy, queer history and body image in a nuanced and enlightening way – with a lot of laughs along the way.
