If you’ve ever wondered what Banksy’s all about or if the Mona Lisa is a fake, then grab your headphones because these nine art podcasts are for you.
Sometimes going to a museum or an art gallery can feel like a whole different world. Maybe you’ve seen crowds of people at the Louvre trying to catch a glimpse of the Mona Lisa and wondered why it’s so popular. Or seen a news story about another Banksy piece and thought, “Who are they exactly?”
Well, that’s where a good old podcast can come in handy to help break down the art world into easy audio chunks. And even if you’re only one to dip your toe into the art world, there’s plenty to get stuck into on your commute to work or even while you’re walking around the Tate Modern.
With shows hosted by artists from across the world and a few famous faces, these nine podcasts are the ideal listening partner for both art lovers and the art curious.
The Banksy Story
We may never find out the real identity of Banksy, but a new BBC Radio 4 10-part podcast series will paint a picture of what the artist is like, with stories from people who knew and worked with him. Hosted by James Peak, the series dives into the world of Banksy and how he went from a kid spraying graffiti on walls to a cultural phenomenon.
Talk Art
Hosted by actor Russell Tovey and gallerist Robert Diament, this podcast is not only bursting with exclusive interviews with the world’s leading artists and curators but you may even get to hear the odd famous voice or two. Previous episodes have included Alan Carr, Emma Dabiri and Zachary Quinto.
The Great Women Artists
If you’re looking to learn more about women artists or art history, this one’s right up your street. Hosted by art historian and curator Katy Hessel, each episode of The Great Women Artists focuses on a particular female artist, either chatting about their careers or talking to curators and art lovers about which female artists inspire them and their work.
Meet Me At The Museum
This podcast takes a slightly more interactive approach as each episode is made up of a famous face taking a person of their choosing to their favourite museum or gallery. Not only do we get to listen to the inner workings of a museum but we also get to listen to conversations about anything and everything. Previous episodes have included Elizabeth Day and Mel Giedroyc.
The Lonely Palette
Described as a podcast that “returns art history to the masses, one painting at a time”, The Lonely Palette focuses on one painting per episode and does a deep dive into it. Host Tamar Avishai interviews museum visitors on the spot in front of the painting, chatting about everything from the art itself to the social context of the paintings.
A Piece Of Work
Even though this podcast ended in 2017 with 11 episodes, it’s still worth a listen if you want to learn more about modern art. Presented by Broad City actor Abbi Jacobson, A Piece Of Work looks at the life and work of artists such as Andy Warhol, Carolee Schneemann and Jackson Pollock.
Art Juice
Hosts and artists Alice Sheridan and Louise Fletcher share their thoughts and feelings about art, and life in general, through honest and funny conversations. This podcast is basically like listening to your friends chat about art on a Friday night.
The Week In Art
Looking to stay up to date on the happenings of the art world? The Week In Art has you covered. Each weekly episode covers breaking news and insider insights into the art world’s biggest stories that week, including interviews with a bunch of famous faces.
ArtCurious
Well, the clue is definitely in the name for this podcast. ArtCurious is all about looking into the weird and wonderful art stories that don’t always get talked about. Host Jennifer Dasal asks questions including: is the Mona Lisa fake? Did Van Gogh really kill himself? And did Michelangelo paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling all alone while lying on his back?
