Whether you want to dive into the stories behind iconic designs or fancy hearing some shopping tips straight from the experts, there’s a fashion podcast that will be the perfect fit.
Every outfit has a story to tell, and now a new cohort of fashion podcasts is unravelling how our clothes are made, the history behind the trends and the cultural significance of the garments we wear.
If you think that a fashion podcast sounds like a contradiction in terms – fashion is a visual medium, after all – then prepare to have your preconceptions challenged.
From stylists dishing out nuggets of sartorial advice to historians delving into the archives to bring us the fascinating stories behind the unassuming garments we wear every day, there’s a wealth of riches to get stuck into. And if you’re after a more sustainable spin on style? There’s a podcast for that, too. Here are some of our favourites…
On Rotation
You’ll likely have already heard of, if not used, social fashion rental app By Rotation. Its new podcast, hosted by founder and CEO Eshita Kabra-Davies explores fashion, sustainability, and business in an honest way, featuring inspiring insight from industry experts.
Sustain This!
Self-described as “a slow fashion podcast about so much more than clothes,” hosts Alyssa Beltempo, Christina Mychas and Signe Hansen dive deep into mindful consumption, intentional wardrobes and what it really means to be a conscious consumer.
The Re/Dress
This new launch (arriving on 30 March) is the brainchild of creative consultant Ebony Francis and stylist Emma Thatcher. Every week, the pair will be drawing on their industry expertise to chat all things style: exploring new season trends, answering fashion dilemmas from listeners and sharing what’s on their shopping wish lists.
Dress Fancy
Author Lucy Clayton’s podcast explores the surprising social histories interwoven into the fashion industry. Each episode, she is joined by guests – often fellow writers, academics, designers and artists – to discuss topics including vintage Laura Ashley, the true story of Bridgerton’s Queen Charlotte and the joys of the classic Christmas nativity play.
Every Outfit
Do you follow the @everyoutfitonsatc Instagram account religiously? Chelsea Fairless and Lauren Garroni are the two women behind it, carefully documenting – and dishing out snarky commentary on – every one of Carrie and Co’s fashion statements. In their podcast Every Outfit, you’ll find episodes dedicated to specific SATC instalments alongside more general musings on all things fashion and pop culture.
Dressed: The History Of Fashion
This one’s pretty self-explanatory. Hosts April Calahan and Cassidy Zachary, both fashion historians, delve into the stories behind our clothes and the people who made them. The podcast is enjoyably wide-ranging in focus: you can find episodes dedicated to famous designers, instalments about costumes for film and discussions around sustainability (as well as an episode dedicated to Princess Diana’s ‘revenge’ style, which is a must-listen for fans of The Crown).
Hello Girls
Fashion journalists Emily Cronin and Kate Finnigan’s new podcast sees them explore the secret life of the garments that underpin our best outfits: our underwear. They’ll be celebrating the unsung heroes of our wardrobes by discussing everything from bra fitting to celebrity lingerie brands, joined by expert guests ranging from fashion historians to psychologists.
Twinset Unzipped
You’ll recognise Sarah Ellis and Philippa Ross as the friends and fashion influencers behind We Are Twinset, which started out as a blog before evolving to encompass an Instagram account, a clothing brand and now a podcast, which launched earlier this month. It’s not strictly all about style – previous episodes have touched on parenting fails, social media and the world of work – but you’ll find a smattering of fashion and beauty in the mix, too.
This Old Thing?
Stylist and sustainability advocate Bay Garnett sits down with celebrity guests to learn about the most memorable outfits from their childhood and beyond, providing unique insights into their life in style. You’ll also pick up plenty of tips on secondhand shopping along the way. Garnett’s recent guests have included the likes of Poppy Delevingne, Stacey Dooley and Oscar-winning costume designer Sandy Powell.
