Bridgerton’s Bessie Carter is back on our screens in another period drama all about the notorious Mitford sisters.
Another day, another period drama to get excited about. UKTV is bringing a six-part series to our screens that tells the scandalous story of the Mitford sisters, an aristocratic family that dominated the tabloids with their controversial antics.
Set against the gathering storm clouds of the 1930s, masked by the decadence, frivolity and lavishness of British high society, Outrageous will bring the full, uncensored story of the family to the screen for the first time.
Intrigued? Here’s everything we know about the series so far
What is the true story behind UKTV’s Outrageous?
A story of family bonds and betrayals, public scandal, political extremism, love, heartache and even imprisonment, the series is based on The Mitford Girls, a book by Mary S Lovell about the clan, which explores how throughout much of the 1930s and 40s, the Mitford siblings were a source of international fascination. But why were the Mitfords so notorious?
Though the eldest sister, Nancy, was arguably the most famous, the family was no stranger to scandalous exploits: one sister, Diana, jilted her husband, the Guinness heir, and their children to run away with British Union of Fascists founder Oswald Mosely; another, Unity, became known as Adolf Hitler’s ‘muse”; a third, Jessica, declared herself a communist while fighting fascism in Spain.
As the synopsis puts it: “Outrageous is the story of six sisters who refused to play by the rules, their often-scandalous lives making headlines around the world.”
