Starring Timotheé Chalamet as Roald Dahl’s beloved chocolatier, this is set to be a hit.
With all of the great movies being released over the coming months, it feels like we are living in a world of pure imagination.
And that feeling is set to intensify because the trailer for the upcoming film Wonka has been released. Fans of the Roald Dahl book Charlie And The Chocolate Factory and the 1971 musical Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory will be rejoicing as yet another instalment is added to the Wonka-verse.
Posted on YouTube yesterday (11 July), the trailer has already received over 8.1 million views and the internet is buzzing. Directed by Paul King (Paddington) and starring fan favourite Timotheé Chalamet as the beloved Willy Wonka, the excitement and furore surrounding the film is unsurprising.
So, what can filmgoers expect?
Who will star in Wonka?
As mentioned, Timothee Chalamet will play the titular role, but a host of other stars will be bringing the sweet-filled world to life too. Love Actually’s Hugh Grant will play a 20-inch Oompa Loompa, while Calah Lane, Olivia Colman, Sally Hawkins, Keegan-Michael Key, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Rowan Atkinson and Jim Carter also have starring roles.

What is Wonka about?
Wonka will act as a prequel to Charlie And The Chocolate Factory and will follow Willy Wonka in his youth before the opening of his famous factory.
A synopsis for the movie reads: “Starring Timothée Chalamet in the title role, this irresistibly vivid and inventive big screen spectacle will introduce audiences to a young Willy Wonka, chock-full of ideas and determined to change the world one delectable bite at a time – proving that the best things in life begin with a dream, and if you’re lucky enough to meet Willy Wonka, anything is possible.”
Director Paul King told Entertainment Weekly in July that he wanted Wonka to act as a ‘companion piece’ to the 1971 classic. “If you imagine those people in that world 25 years earlier, that was my starting process,” he explained. “Eventually, he would grow into that person and that factory.”
At first glance, the film appears to be whimsical and funny, while Chalamet will certainly be showing off his musical prowess – King said the Oscar-nominated actor is “extraordinary” at singing and dancing.
When will Wonka be released?
Sadly, we will have to wait a few more months for our golden tickets to the film, with a release date set for 15 December 2023. Wonka will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros Pictures.
Let the countdown begin.
