Based on the first book in Richard Osman’s hit series, The Thursday Murder Club follows four retired friends – Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron – who meet once a week to investigate unsolved murders.
Cosy crime’s biggest success story of recent years, Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club series continues to take the world by storm – with millions of copies sold and a fifth book on the way in 2025.
However, away from the literary world, the first instalment is being adapted for the big screen and, like many cosy crime fans, we’re very excited. Published in 2020, it follows four friends – Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron – who meet up once a week to investigate unsolved murders.
But who will be taking on these iconic roles? Well, here’s everything we know so far about The Thursday Murder Club film adaptation, plus some major new cast updates.
What is the plot of The Thursday Murder Club?
“In a peaceful retirement village, four unlikely friends meet up once a week to investigate unsolved murders. But when a brutal killing takes place on their very doorstep, the Thursday Murder Club find themselves in the middle of their first live case. Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron might be pushing 80, but they still have a few tricks up their sleeves,” reads the synopsis.
Who will star in The Thursday Murder Club?
Steven Spielberg acquired the adaptation rights from Osman, with his company Amblin Entertainment behind the adaptation and Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Mrs Doubtfire, Harry Potter) writing and directing. Now, Netflix is also attached to the project.
David Tennant, Jonathan Pryce, Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays and Henry Lloyd-Hughes have already joined Helen Mirren (Elizabeth), Pierce Brosnan (Ron), Ben Kingsley (Ibrahim) and Celia Imrie (Joyce) in the star-studded cast, and now a whole new raft of stars have been announced.
Withnail & I and Four Weddings And A Funeral stalwart Richard E. Grant is joining the already star-studded cast, along with Lucifer’s Tom Ellis, Ted Lasso actor Sarah Niles, Top Boy’s Geoff Bell, Doctor Who’s Ingrid Oliver and Paul Freeman of Raiders of the Lost Ark and Tokyo Trial fame.
When will The Thursday Murder Club be released?
As production hasn’t kicked off yet, we’ll probably be waiting a while for the film’s release but watch this space for further details.
