Anne Hathaway is booked, busy and returning to the world of romcoms. Based on the love story of the same name by Robinne Lee, The Idea Of You centres on Solène (played by Hathaway), a 40-year-old single mum who strikes up an unexpected romance with the lead singer of August Moon, 24-year-old Hayes Campbell.

If this sounds eerily familiar to a certain former One Direction member then there may be some truth to the speculation that the story is inspired by Harry Styles. In an interview with Vogue in 2020, author Lee was asked about this inspiration, to which she responded that “inspired is a strong word” but “the seed was planted” after researching his band a few years ago and finding out that Styles often dated older women.

What is the plot of The Idea Of You?

When Solène steps in to chaperone her teenage daughter’s trip to the Coachella Music Festival after her ex-husband bails at the last minute, she has a chance encounter with Hayes and there is an instant, undeniable spark between them.

As they begin a whirlwind romance, it isn’t long before Hayes’s superstar status poses unavoidable challenges to their relationship, and Solène soon discovers that life in the glare of his spotlight might be more than she bargained for.

Who will star in The Idea Of You?

Directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick), the film stars Anne Hathaway as Solène and Nicholas Galitzine (Mary & George) as superstar Hayes.

Ella Rubin, Annie Mumolo, Reid Scott, Perry Mattfeld, Jordan Aaron Hall, Mathilda Gianopoulos, Raymond Cham Jr, Jaiden Anthony, Viktor White and Dakota Adan are also set to star.

When will The Idea Of You be released?
