Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt join forces with Hannah Waddingham in high-action romcom The Fall Guy. And it looks brilliant…
Awards season is over, which means we can settle back into our plush cinema seats with a big box of popcorn in hand, safe in the knowledge that we’re about to dive back into the world of entertainment for entertainment’s sake again… or are we?
On paper, The Fall Guy sounds simple enough: it’s a turbocharged action movie (with a hefty dose of romance thrown in for good measure) about a stuntman who, after a devastating on-set injury, decides to vacate the glitzy world of Hollywood, leaving the love of his life in the process.
A sinister plot and a missing actor soon draws our guy back into the fray, however, and it’s not long before he finds himself ensnared in a mystery – and face-to-face with the woman he left feeling hurt and bewildered when he upped sticks all those months ago.

As you’ve likely guessed, there’s more to The Fall Guy than meets the eye, as – much like Barbie before it – the film has a lot of fun while hammering home some important messages. Primarily, that AI had no place in filmmaking and that Hollywood’s stunt community are the true unsung heroes of filmmaking,
Intrigued? Here’s what you need to know…
What’s the plot of The Fall Guy?
Inspired by the 1980s TV series of the same name, The Fall Guy centres on Colt Seavers, a stuntman who doubles for charismatic film star Tom Ryder whenever the latter is called upon to do something dangerous.
When an dangerous stunt leaves him with a broken back, Colt flees Hollywood – and ends his relationship with Jody Moreno in the process. Some 18 months later, though, the woman he loves is directing her very own movie – and he leaps at the chance to see her again.
Too bad, then, that Jody is still furious with him and that the star of the show (you guessed it: it’s Tom) has disappeared. So it’s left to Colt to take the fall, as it were, and save Jody’s movie from disappearing down the metaphorical drain…
Who stars in The Fall Guy?
Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt serve up some serious chemistry as Colt and Jody, while Ted Lasso’s Hannah Waddingham steps into the well-heeled shoes of Jody’s ruthless producer.
Winston Duke, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Stephanie Hsu also star.
What are people saying about The Fall Guy?
Speaking to Screen Rant about the project, Gosling has said that he is “very happy to be the first actor to say I did none of my own stunts in this movie”.
“I was very happy to leave it to the professionals. I’ve had a stunt double probably my whole life. And there’s always this strange moment where they come in, they do all the cool stuff, they get none of the credit, they leave, and then we sort of pretend like I did it,” he explains.
“It’s just so fun and such an honour to be a part of something that shines light on them and shows them to be the real unsung heroes of the industry. Records were broken in this movie. David is obviously a former stunt guy, so he just surrounded us with the best of the best and the film really does become a love letter to the stunt community and their legacy.”
When and where can we watch The Fall Guy?
The Fall Guy will be available to watch in UK cinemas from Thursday 2 May.
