Here’s everything you need to know about The Critic, Sir Ian McKellen and Gemma Arterton’s forthcoming film about a theatre reviewer in trouble.
A story of ambition and blackmail with a stellar Brit cast and an anti-hero at its centre, The Critic looks set to be one of 2024’s most intriguing films. A combination of drama and thriller, the film is based on Anthony Quinn’s 2015 novel Curtain Call and follows an ageing theatre critic as he attempts to salvage his career using dubious means.
Intrigued? Here’s everything to know so far about The Critic and when we can expect it to land in cinemas.
What is the plot of The Critic?
Jimmy Erskine is the most feared theatre critic of the 1930s. After his newspaper’s owner passes away, it’s taken over by the owner’s son, David Brooke – who stands for something a little different to his predecessor.
Focused on patriotism and ‘family values’, it’s not long before Brooke fires Erskine for his outrageous behaviour and opinions, in particular a savage review of actor Nina Land.
Erskine sets out to get his job back by writing a glowing review for Nina, promising her a glittering career. But in return, she must do him a favour by helping him catch Brooke out – a bargain that leads to devastating consequences.
