People are excited to watch Netflix’s space-trotting fantasy epic Rebel Moon, despite mixed reactions from critics.
It’s Christmastime, which means there’s a bevy of new festive films on the horizon. If you’re in the mood for something very different, though, don’t despair: Netflix is here to serve with Rebel Moon – aka the first film in a planned trilogy about a mysterious stranger who crashes onto a moon in the furthest reaches of the universe.
Let’s dive into this one, shall we?
What is Rebel Moon about?
The stranger we mentioned earlier? It isn’t Santa Claus; it is, in fact, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a woman who forges a new life for herself amid a peaceful community of farmers.
When they find themselves under threat from the tyrannical Regent Balisarius (Fra Fee) and his cruel emissary, Admiral Noble (Ed Skrein), however, it’s up to Kora to band together with rebels from across the galaxy to fight against the armies of the corrupt Motherworld.

Not to get all Star Wars about it, but it looks like Kora is the galaxy’s only hope. Go figure.
Who stars in Rebel Moon?
Boutella, Fee and Skrein are joined by a starry cast: Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Ray Fisher, Doona Bae, Jena Malone, Staz Nair, E. Duffy and Michiel Huisman are just a few of the big names slated to appear in this movie.
What are people saying about Rebel Moon?
Directed by Zack Snyder, the film (which he dubs a “space opera”) was originally intended to be a Star Wars movie before he realised it was better as an original mythology.
“I was like, ‘I don’t want any of your characters. I don’t want to do anything with any known characters; I just want to do my own thing on the side,’” he told Empire. “And originally I was like, ‘It should be rated R!’
“I knew it was a big ask, to be honest. But the deeper I got into it, I realised it was probably never going to be what I wanted.”

It’s worth noting that the first reactions to the film have been mixed, with some critics lauding it for its stunning visuals and fantastic mythology.
Others, however, have said it’s far too concerned with its high-octane action sequences than it is character development. The jury, it seems, is still out on Rebel Moon.
When and where can we watch Rebel Moon?
Rebel Moon: Part One will be released on Netflix on 22 December, while the second chapter in the trilogy, The Scargiver, will premiere 19 April 2024.
