Mother Mary – starring Michaela Coel and Anne Hathaway, with Charli XCX on musical duties – has the potential to be mega.

How do we love thee, Michaela Coel? Let us count the ways.

The star and creator of the breathtakingly brilliant I May Destroy You is a beautifully obscene genius – and one with an uncanny knack for dealing with the millennial experience. Now, she’s joining forces with Academy Award-winning actor Anne Hathaway (aka Mia Thermopolis herself) and Charli XCX for what sounds like a truly unmissable movie.

Here’s what you need to know, then, about Mother Mary.

What’s Mother Mary about?

Details on the plot of David Lowery’s new film are scant, but what we do know is this: it will chart a fictional musician’s romantic relationship with an iconic fashion designer, all against the vivid backdrop of the world of pop music.

As Deadline reports, though, it is being billed as an “epic pop melodrama” – which means the course of true love is unlikely to run smoothly. Just how we like it, quite frankly.

Who stars in Mother Mary?

As mentioned already, Coel and Hathaway are set to take the lead in Mother Mary: the former as our innovative designer, the latter as our soulful singer.

Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX will write and produce original songs for the film, with an original score composed by Daniel Hart.

Who is behind the scenes on Mother Mary?

Green Knight’s Lowery is directing Mother Mary from a script he penned (although one can only help that he asked Coel to cast her eye over it, being as she’s such a brilliant writer).

When can we watch Mother Mary?

It’s still very early days on this one; indeed, production has yet to begin on Mother Mary – although we’ve no doubt this one will be soaring its way into UK cinemas before too long.

We’ll bring you more details as and when they become available. Until then, we’ll be blasting out Boys by Charli XCX on repeat. Obviously.
